GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Five minutes earlier, Michael Stoeber had walked by the fax machine. It was empty. He found the sight peculiar, considering it was late morning, the peak of signing day, and the majority of players Florida thought would commit had yet to fax their signed letters of intent. A little worried, the Gators' director of football administration, the self-proclaimed "paper guy," checked the fax machine again. And there they were. Five letters. All signed. Chris Leak, Joe Cohen, Reggie Nelson, Clint McMillan and Howard Lingard were all going to be Gators. "Just like that, I felt a lot better," Stoeber said. "That was the highlight of the day. You talk about a group showing up at the same time. Leak, a quarterback, was the national high school player of the year. Cohen, a running back, and Nelson, a cornerback, both joined Leak on the Parade All-America team. "Pretty funny how that works out," head coach Ron Zook said. "You've got a pretty good start to your football team with those five guys." Wayne Drehs is a staff writer for ESPN.com. He can be reached at wayne.drehs@espn3.com |
