The last Saturday of the season had some major BCS implications, with Miami winning and setting up a date with Ohio State in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and Washington State's win over UCLA doing nothing to straighten out the picture.
There were a few things that stood out on this final day, so read on as you await the result of the Big 12 championship game.
Ohio State vs. Miami
Ohio State's defense has a good chance to slow the Miami offensive machine, but the D will have to force some turnovers while the offense plays ball-control and keeps Ken Dorsey, Willis McGahee and the rest of the Hurricanes' weapons off the field. Here's where I see the advantages in the various phases of the game:
| |
| Willis McGahee might have wrapped up the Heisman with his six-TD performance Saturday. |
Quarterback - Miami
Running back - Toss-up (if Maurice Clarett is healthy)
Offensive line - Miami
Wide receivers/Tight end - Miami
Defensive line - Miami
Linebackers - OSU
Defensive backs - Miami
Special teams - OSU
Offensive staff - Miami
Defensive staff - Toss-up
Head coach - Toss-up
Prediction: Miami, 28-10
My Heisman top five
1. Willis McGahee, Miami: His 205 yards and six touchdowns against Virginia Tech put him over the top.
2. Carson Palmer, USC: One of the hottest players in the nation made a statement against Notre Dame.
3. Brad Banks, Iowa: Threw 25 TDs and just four interceptions while leading the Big Ten's highest-scoring offense.
4. Larry Johnson, Penn State: 2,000 yards is impressive, no matter who the big games were against.
5. Ken Dorsey, Miami: He wins the Bob Hope Career Achievement Award for his 38-1 record as a starter.
Final special teams alert of the season: Washington State and UCLA
The Cougars and Bruins had all kinds of problems in the kicking game. Miscommunication caused a botched onside kick for the Cougars, who also gave up 131 kick return yards and averaged 36.7 yards per punt.
UCLA was not any better, allowing a blocked punt and missing an extra point while averaging 37.6 yards per punt. Not exactly the performances a coach wants heading into bowl season.
Worst call when leading 49-21: Halfback pass
I'm still scratching my head over Miami calling for a Jarrett Payton-to-Ken Dorsey throwback from the Virginia Tech 1-yard line. Virginia Tech's Willie Pile liked the call, though, going 99 yards the other way for a touchdown.
