I've been on the road for the last couple of weeks, but my return to Bristol was an exciting one.
Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Georgia and NC State were all dealt their first loss of the year, while Miami was actually behind when the fourth quarter started.
And there were plenty of other things happening all over the country, so read on for more pertinent information from a crazy weekend.
Games of the Day
Texas over Nebraska, 27-24: The game wasn't over until Nathan Vasher intercepted a Jammal Lord pass at the Texas goal line with just 10 seconds remaining, snapping the Cornhuskers' 26-game home winning streak. The Longhorns also won in Lincoln in 1998 and are the only visiting team to win at Memorial Stadium in 76 games dating back to 1991.
Pitt over Virginia Tech, 28-21: The Panthers scored the winning touchdown on a 53-yard run by Brandon Miree with just over 4:00 remaining, giving them their first-ever 4-0 start in Big East play.
Upset specials
Boston College over Notre Dame, 14-7: The Eagles went into South Bend and put an end to Notre Dame's unbelievable run, scoring the winning touchdown on a 71-yard interception return by Josh Ott.
Florida over Georgia, 20-13: The Bulldogs were knocked out of the ranks of the undefeated thanks in part to 339 yards and a pair of TD passes from Rex Grossman. The win was the Gators' 12th in their last 13 games against Georgia.
Akron over Marshall, 34-20: Byron Leftwich missed part of the game with a shin injury, the Thundering Herd turned the ball over seven times and the Zips took advantage by outscoring the Thundering Herd 27-10 during the second and third quarters.
Coaches of the Day
| |
| Chan Gailey and Georgia Tech helped whittle the list of unbeatens to just four teams. |
Chan Gailey, Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets have been killed by injuries this year but took down unbeaten NC State by erasing an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit for a 24-17 win.
Tom O'Brien, Boston College: He can thank five Irish turnovers and Derrick Knight's 129 rushing yards for the Eagles' third win in the last four meetings in the series.
Walt Harris, Pittsburgh: The Panthers are 7-2 for the first time since their 1983 Fiesta Bowl season thanks to the win at Virginia Tech.
Woodshed games
Kansas State over Kansas, 64-0: Bill Snyder's team outgained the Jayhawks 494-115 and quarterback Ell Roberson had four touchdowns -- three passing, one rushing -- before halftime.
Texas Tech over Baylor, 62-11: Another big game for Kliff Kingsbury -- 373 passing yards, 3 TDs -- meant another bad day for the Bears.
Connecticut over Florida Atlantic, 61-14: The Huskies got 105 rushing yards and three touchdowns from Terry Cauley in the first half and never looked back against the Division I-AA Owls.
Horseshoe game (close but no cigar): Clemson over Duke, 34-21
The Blue Devils blew a 24-10 fourth-quarter lead but came back to tie the score at 31 with 2:48 left, only to be done in by Aaron Hunt's 21-yard field goal with eight seconds left. Duke has not won an ACC game since November of 2000.
Turnaround of the week: Oregon
The Ducks gave up a combined 89 points and 1,007 passing yards in back-to-back home losses to Arizona State and USC, but they bounced back to hold Stanford to under 200 total yards in a 41-14 win over the Cardinal.
Ripley's Believe It or Not halftime score: Rutgers over Miami, 17-14
Miami once again struggled against an opponent most thought it would dominate, going into the fourth quarter facing that same three-point deficit.
Newcomer of the week: Charlie Whitehurst, Clemson
The redshirt freshman set school records with 34 completions and 420 yards passing against Duke and also threw three TD passes on the day.
Players of the day
Larry Johnson, Penn State: Rushed for 279 yards against Illinois, including an 84-yard TD run, breaking the school record of 257 he set just two weeks ago versus Northwestern.
Jammal Lord, Nebraska: Shredded Texas for 234 rushing yards on Saturday, and his 1,155 yards on the ground so far this year are the most ever for a Nebraska QB.
Seneca Wallace, Iowa State: His 493 total yards against Missouri broke the single-game school record, and he led a 93-yard scoring drive that led to the winning touchdown with just 32 seconds remaining.
Brandon Everage: Piled up 17 total tackles against Colorado and also chipped in with an interception and the ensuing 64-yard return
Robbie Mixon, Central Michigan: Had 43 carries for 377 yards and four TDs in a 47-21 win over eastern Michigan.
The entire Ohio State defense: The Buckeyes held Minnesota to just 112 total yards and ran their string of consecutive quarters not allowing a touchdown to 10.
Special teams alert: Pittsburgh, Miami
The Panthers had a punt blocked and botched the snap on another, mistakes that could have been the difference in a close game, while the Hurricanes had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown and also had an extra-point blocked in their slow start at Rutgers.
My top five teams
1. Oklahoma
2. Miami
3. Ohio State
4. Iowa
5. Washington State
Teams on the rise: Washington State, Iowa, Pitt, Maryland
Teams on the decline: N.C. State, Marshall, Texas A&M, Washington
Games I can't wait to see next week
Iowa State at Kansas State: A big game in the Big 12 North, as both teams trail Colorado in the division and the loser will be all but eliminated from contention for the Big 12 championship game.
Miami at Tennessee: The Vols can salvage a disappointing season by winning this rare November non-conference game. A slow start here could finally doom Miami.
Oregon at Washington State: Wazzu is coming off a huge win over Arizona State and is in the driver's seat in the Pac-10, but the Ducks have recovered after two big home losses.
Michigan at Minnesota: The loser of this game will be out of the Big Ten race.
