Portis knows Miami must focus on Hokies, not Roses

ESPN.com news services

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Clinton Portis has an idea for some of his University of Miami teammates who have premature visions of roses.

"We should get some Hokie stickers and walk around with them," Portis said. "That's who we have to play for."

To get to the Rose Bowl, the Hurricanes need a win Saturday at Virginia Tech. Portis has helped carry the load offensively all season.

Last Saturday, he became the fifth running back in UM history to rush for more than a 1,000 yards in a season, joining a list that includes former Immokalee High standout and current Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James.

"I'm trying to do my part," Portis said. "I'm hungry. I want it. To come this close to the Rose Bowl and blow it ... I've got to perform."

In Miami's 65-7 rout of Washington, Portis scored three touchdowns and rushed for more than 100 yards for the sixth time this season. Overall, he's gained 1,076 yards on 186 carries and scored 10 TDs (9 rushing, 1 receiving).

"He's been playing well all season," said Miami quarterback Kenny Dorsey.

Born and raised in Gainesville, Portis was recruited by Florida coach Steve Spurrier -- as a defensive back. He came to Miami because Butch Davis assured him an opportunity to compete for a spot as a running back.

Injuries to James Jackson and Najeh Davenport forced Portis into a starting spot as a true freshman, and he has made the most of his opportunities since.

He rushed for 838 yards as a freshman and 485 yards as a backup to Jackson his sophomore year.

As a three-year player, Portis has taken on more of a leadership role, helping bring along younger running backs Willis McGahee and Frank Gore.

"The push he's getting with Frank, and that competition, that little rivalry they've got going, it's great for both of them," Dorsey said. "They both take advantage of the opportunities they get."

The grind of the season comes down to a game in Blacksburg, where Portis ran for 139 yards as a true freshman two years ago. It didn't matter. The Hurricanes lost big to Virginia Tech, 43-10.
