User feedback: Who will be No. 1?

ESPN.com

We asked for your opinion on who you thought would be No. 1 and, wow, do you guys disagree on this one. Countless e-mails provided countless different teams. But here's a quick recap on some of the more popular selections.

Here's what you had to say:

The Favorites
The Florida Gators will win the national championship this year. Steve Spurrier's team is loaded with expierence as 17 starters return from last years SEC championship squad including pre-season all americans Alex Brown and Jabbar Gaffney. They have not only 1, but 2 quarterbacks that could start almost anywhere in the country, and a defense that will be second to none in 2001. Watch out Seminoles and Vols... the Swamp will be rockin when you come to town!!

Mike Black
Tampa

Considering they return almost an entire 2000 team, possess the nation's most talented coaching staff, and have a semi-weak schedule, the Sooners should cruise to the 2001 title game.

Christopher Kirk
New York City

Oklahoma -- Bob Stoops will become college football's answer to John Wooden.

Bill Threlkeld
Costa Mesa, CA

3 words: BOOMER FREAKIN SOONER

Christopher Billing
Norman, Okla.

Texas will coast to the national title. Simms = Heisman Trophy winner. OU can't stop us this year. It's payback time. I guarantee Texas holds every opponent to under 28 points and no one can stop Roy Williams and B.J. Johnson. Enough said. Hook 'em Horns.

Chris Goains
Austin, Texas

Texas will win the National Championship...Mack Brown has the talent to run the table...there are no more excuses, period!

Gilbert
San Antonio

Larry Coker will lead the Hurricanes to a national championship in the 2001 season. The Canes have just too much talent for the rest of the nation to compete against.

David C. Marmon
Statesboro, Ga.

The Miami Hurricanes are going to win the national championship this year. They're loaded at every position, they've got tremendous depth and their three tough road games are all against teams that won't be as good as they were last year. They'll start in the top 3 in the rankings so they won't have to move up very far to get to number one in the BCS. (You know...the Bowden Championship Series.)

David
Hoboken, N.J.

Sleepers
Nebraska! They will find an I-back which has never been tough for the BIG RED. Since Vick decided to go pro they now have the most explosive players in college football in Eric Crouch. Tracey Wistrom returns. As always the offensive line will be a force. Return great unit of Blackshirts. Watch out because here come the Big Red!

Big Red Machine
New Lennix, Ill.

After almost three decades as a Ducks fan, I never thought I'd be saying it with a straight face: Oregon is a legitimate contender.

Smitty
North Bend, WA

Florida State all the way baby! FSU is always a great team, great coach, top recruiting class, great returning players.

Jonathan Britt
Bayonne, N.J.

The Hokies will surprise everyone and end up in the Rose Bowl this year, even without Vick the Virginia Tech has a superstrong team, almost the entire defense is returning, as well as Lee Suggs and Andre Davis on offense. VT gets Miami in Blacksburg this year too.

Matt
Herndon, VA

Oregon the best offence in the country, a good defense, and the best home field atvantage in the world.

Greg Mombert
New York, NY

As in most sports, a strong defense wins national championships. Tennessee may have the best defensive line in the country with Outland Trophy winner John Henderson and Will Overstreet. Casey Clausen put up better numbers as a freshman than Peyton Manning. Kelley Washington will be known around the country before the season is over. Year in and year out, Philip Fulmer always has the Vols ready to make a run at the title.

John
Tullahoma, Tenn.

Longshots
Dear God:
Please let it be Notre Dame.
Amen.

Chad Helmle
Mount Laurel, N.J.

University of South Carolina. Coach Holtz returns 16 starters, and a solid recruiting year will have heads turned as the gamecocks will shock the nation this year.

Darrin Skinner
Fort Bragg, N.C.

Georgia Tech all the way. Florida State is going down and so will everybody else.

Mak
Hawkinsville, Ga..

Tommy Bowden's Clemson Tigers will surprise everyone this year. Woodrow Dantzler will lead the Tiger's to the national championship while putting his grasp on the Heisman Trophy.

Scooter White
Central, S.C.

Kansas State. This is the year they finish the job.

Julie Pefley
Lenexa, Kansas

The should-not-be-viewed-as-a-surprise team of 2001 will be Northwestern. NU will take its third trip to the Rose Bowl this coming season and leave with the Sears trophy. Why? Devestating offense returns 10 starters, including Heisman candidate Damien Anderson. Only question mark last year was a suspect defense, but after seeing the way NU's offense turned around after a miserable 1999 season, my money's on Randy Walker doing the same with the 'Cat defense.

Chris Nolan
New York, NY
