We asked for your opinion. Is Tressel the right man for the job? Should Glen Mason have been hired? Will Ohio State return to the top of the national rankings soon? Here's what you had to say: Tressel is a treat for OSU A great choice! Tressel is a class act and a proven winner ... that's a great combination. Ryan W. Rettig Chicago Ohio State's hiring of Jim Tressel is outstanding. It is about time a major D-I program hires a quality head coach from a lower division school. Glen Mason is in the same category as John Cooper just a coach with a couple of good seasons under his belt. Ohio State's decision of hiring Tressel should be highly commended. Rick Secrist Ontario, Calif. I think Ohio State made an excellent choice in Jim Tressel. He is obviously a guy of high integrity, and stresses the importance of teamwork. He comes from an excellent coaching bloodline, as his father is one of the most famous high school coaches in the state of Ohio. I think Jim Tressel is going to turn the OSU program around quickly and bring them back to the top of the national college football scene where they should be. Watch out Wolverines, your worst nightmare just took over the Buckeyes! Go Bucks! Ben Ward Columbus, Ohio Jim Tressel showed Buckeye fans and college football fans everywhere what type of a coach Ohio State has found. The press conference displayed his expectations of high academic success and his demand for players to respect the team and OSU. Coach Tressel will bring back academic and athletic success to the football program, as well as Ohio State as a whole. He will bring discipline back to OSU and he will bring a national championship back to Ohio. Jason Sarver Columbus, Ohio His words inspired me. I wanted more than ever to be able to suit up with the Buckeyes and go to war for the man. A new era of Ohio State glory has begun. JD Hartwell Dublin, Ohio I'm originally from Youngstown, Ohio, now a 10-year member of the U.S. Air Force, and I can tell you for certain that Ohio State will no longer be taken lightly by Michigan or any bowl teams as long as Jim Tressel is at the helm. Youngstown State's football team has been the lone bright spot in a city on the brink since the early 80's. Don't forget, Tressel turned a chance at the Buckeye job down years ago, and with good reason. Destiny was on his side to take the job at this moment in time. Archie Kelly Warner Robins, Ga. I think that the Buckeyes did a tremendous job in the hiring of Jim Tressel. Even though he has been a Division I-AA coach, he has proven he knows what it takes to win. I think he will bring the perfect attitude and style this team has needed. He sounded extremely impressive in his press conference on Thursday. I can't wait to see him lead the Bucks on to the field for the first time. Congratulations Mr. Geiger and Mr. Griffin on a job well done. Scott Arnett Wapakoneta, Ohio Jim Tressel will bring class, dignity and respect back to the football program and its players at Ohio State. Need proof? Look at his record. Need more proof? Talk to his former players. Brian Luther Hubbard, Ohio Who is Jim Tressel anyway? What a joke! First you hear about Holtz, Harris, Moeller, Gruden, and Belloti. Then you hear of some other names that aren't so well known. All of them would be better than Tressel. He's a I-AA coach with only a decent record at that level in recent years. All these OSU fans start talking about how any move to OSU would be an upward move. The Buckeyes stink and have stunk for a long time. As a long time Buckeye I was incredibly disappointed with the selection. We pulled a UNC (basketball - Roy Williams and others) and got stuck with a joke. I am turning in my season tickets! Dave M. Barrett Youngstown, Ohio Who is he? Not the background we were expecting and too old to get the team moving. It's a-wait-and-see situation. Rob Sunley Yorkshire, United Kingdom I have never heard of Jim Tressel, but new blood is sometimes needed. I will be interested to see how well he does with his players and alumni. Football is football no matter what the level. How will he handle the business end is the big question. Torlef Vallejo, Calif. Is the Ohio State coaching job is one of the top five coaching jobs in all of football? No way! If it is, why didn't anyone want the job? Who has heard of Jim Tressel besides people in northeast Ohio. Ohio State fans and students this could be a blessing in disguise! After Ohio State stops winning games all together, tickets to an empty stadium should be much easier and cheaper to get. Kevin Hess Dayton, Ohio Who??????? Mike Thompson Los Angeles Question, questions and more questions Is Tressel the right man for the job? Maybe, or should I say, I hope so. His record at Youngstown is impressive and he brings a tradition of winning teams to Ohio State. I would have rather seen Glen Mason get the job. His Gophers beating our Bucks this past season shows what he can do with less talent. Imagine what he could do with some of the top Buckeye players? Tressel is the man though and we should support him. All I know is that the game against Minnesota every year has just gotten a lot tougher. Douglas Oesch Lake Placid, N.Y. He better come in with the love and passion for the program Glen Mason would have. That was my main reason for wanting Mason. But after watching the press conference, I'm a little more enthusiastic about the decision. Matt Williams Columbus, Ohio I wonder if Tressel was Ohio State's first choice. It seems to me that if he made such a good impression on his interview, why didn't they hire him earlier? I also wonder if he is experienced enough to take over one of the top programs in college football. Tressel said in his press conference that the field and the ball were the same size no matter where you coached, but the players and the game itself are at a much higher level. I think that they could have hired someone with a more proven track record, but at the same time I am willing to give the guy a chance before I pass my final judgement. I know one thing for certain: he can't possible be any worse that John Cooper! Tom Engle Columbus, Ohio To be honest, who the heck knows. Sure, he's been great in Division I-AA. He's an Ohio native with strong ties to Ohio State. He's a proven disciplinarian. However, beyond that he has no ties to big-time college football. I can't help but feel that we let one get away with Glen Mason. And instead of landing the right coach for the job, we created an enemy who will do all he can to exact personal revenge on the Buckeyes at every opportunity. Having said that, good luck to Jim Tressel. Please beat Michigan next year. Kent Dunn Portland, Ore.
