Editors of Athlon Sports Southeastern Conference football magazine may want to think about publishing their regional edition over again because the University of Kentucky player chosen for the cover may not even be on the team by the time this coming season begins.
Quarterback Dusty Bonner graces the magazine's cover, but late last week he lost his starting job to Jared Lorenzen.
In what appears to be a bizarre move, UK coach Hal Mumme told Bonner about his decision to make Lorenzen the starter last Friday, according to Bonner's high school coach in Valdosta, Ga. That's when Bonner returned to the Lexington campus after being home since the end of the spring semester in May.
It's unknown how long Lorenzen has known.
A source said a reason for the decision was because Lorenzen had improved his grades to Mumme's liking with a solid classroom performance in the spring and in the four-week summer session that ends on Tuesday.
There's little question that Lorenzen, who will be a redshirt freshman, has more physical skills, especially a significantly stronger arm, than Bonner.
But Bonner performed solidly last season, his first as a starter after replacing Tim Couch, and was much more efficient than Lorenzen in spring scrimmage games, which caused Mumme to name him the starter midway through spring practice.
Bonner completed 303 of 465 passes for 3,266 yards and 26 touchdowns last season and led the SEC in passing yards per game, passing efficiency and total offense.
Mumme allowed Lorenzen to compete with Bonner for the starting quarterback job in spring practice, but Bonner clearly outplayed Lorenzen in the first two scrimmages, after which Mumme declared Bonner the starter.
Lorenzen had a brilliant fourth quarter in the Blue-White Spring Game when he completed 22 of 33 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns, but Mumme said after the game that the performance wouldn't sway him away from Bonner.
Bonner's high school coach, Mike O'Brien, said he talked with Bonner and Mumme and that Bonner was stunned by the decision.
If Bonner transfers to another Division I-A school he'll have to sit out this season, but if he transfers to a Division I-AA or Division II school, he would be eligible to play this season. O'Brien said one possibility would be to play at Valdosta State, where Chris Hatcher, a Mumme assistant, is new coach.
Lorenzen, who is in Lexington, was made unavailable for comment by UK assistant sports information director Tony Neely. Mumme was also unavailable for comment. |
