ATLANTA -- Steve Spurrier has relished victories over Georgia for a long, long time.
It goes all the way back to 1966 -- the year he won the Heisman Trophy -- when the Bulldogs ended seventh-ranked Florida's quest for a perfect season with a 27-10 victory in the Gators' eighth game.
Since becoming the Florida coach in 1990, Spurrier has spent some enjoyable late October or early November Saturdays across the field from the Bulldogs. His Gators have won eight of the nine meetings since he took over -- the only setback coming two years ago when Georgia registered a 37-17 upset.
This time it could be even more special for Spurrier. This time it could be his 100th victory of the 1990s, a feat accomplished by only six other Division I teams in NCAA history.
There's no doubt he'll accomplish that feat no matter what happens in Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville Saturday. Next week the Gators have Vanderbilt and the week after that South Carolina. Those two games guarantee at least 101 victories for the Gators during this decade.
The only other teams to post 100 or more victories in a decade were Alabama and Oklahoma in the 1970s, Nebraska and Brigham Young in the 1980s and Florida State and Nebraska so far in the 1990s.
It's an achievement Georgia coach Jim Donnan appreciates.
"It's an unbelievable record considering everybody they had to beat," Donnan said. "I tip my hat to them and Spurrier. He really has done a terrific job down there. The way they've dominated Tennessee and the way they've dominated the league, that's pretty awesome."
Fifth-ranked Florida is a 14-point favorite over the 10th-ranked Dawgs in this battle for the Southeastern Conference East lead. You can bet Spurrier wants No. 100 against Georgia, not Vandy next week. He'll get it. Florida 41-28. |
