The ranks of the unbeaten were trimmed Saturday, and two teams gained entry into the top 10 a day later. The Heisman race came into focus a bit and the second season of the Bowl Championship Series begins in earnest with the release of a new round of rankings. What were people talking about this week in college football? Listen up, as The Fans Speak.
Bracing for the BCS
If Florida State and Penn State remain undefeated I personally
think there should be no question as to them playing one another
in the Sugar Bowl on Jan 4th!
Florida State and Penn State both pulled out a character-building win on the road this weekend. There is no way that Virginia Tech should be whining about the BCS poll. If the Hokies want to blame someone, they should blame their own coach and athletic department for giving them such a weak schedule. The BCS was created to match the 2 teams that deserve to play for the national championship. An undefeated team with the schedule of PSU or FSU is much more deserving than an undefeated VT team. Quit scheduling patsies, Beamer. Your team deserves better, and so do college football fans.
When the BCS standings come out, it'll probably be FSU, Va Tech, then Penn State. That is such a joke. Penn State has destroyed Arizona and Ohio State at home, and pulled out tough road victories at Miami and Purdue. Meanwhile Va Tech has played two ranked opponents (Syracuse,Virginia...the latter no longer ranked), FSU two as well, and they barely survived a scare at Clemson. Any human can figure out which team has been the most impressive this season, and that's why the computer rankings shouldn't be used. Artificial intelligence is retarded.
Oh, yeah, I forgot...the BCS is the biggest crock of a scheme to match No. 1 and No. 2 based on computer rankings that I've ever seen. Who's getting paid the big money to come up with this junk? Playoff system is the way to go.
I am a University of Florida Alumni. Forgive me for being disgruntled, but I have a real problem with the Polls this week. How is it possible that a 5-1 Tennessee is in front of a 6-1 Florida, If the Gators already beat the Vols?!?! This is not only illogical, it is dead wrong. Why is it so difficult to have a system that works for everyone involved?
I think that the BCS rankings will surpise quite a few
people. The computers are going to rank VT ahead of alot
of good teams. VT is a good team, whether or not they are
a great team has to be seen. FSU is still solid and so is
the Big Ten. But when it comes down to it, I want to see
where Georgia Tech will end up.
How is it that Florida is ranked so highly in the polls? They have one impressive win over Tennessee, but lost to a mediocre Alabama team at home. At least Tennessee has a quality loss on their schedule, but these one loss teams do NOT belong in the top 5. It's time for the media darlings to be exposed for what they are...overhyped mediocre teams!
I'm so sick of hearing this talk about Virginia Tech not being worth because of a weak schedule. Has anyone not noticed that Virginia Tech and Florida State have three of the same opponents? (Clemson, Miami, UVA). FSU is playing an incredibly weak ACC schedule, just like the Hokies are playing a weak Big East schedule. So why detract from VT's success for the same reasons we reward the Seminoles? The fact is that if we had to go on "strength of schedule" alone, then the polls would be filled
with nothing but Big Ten and SEC teams. Let the teams play the games on Saturday. When and if Virginia Tech goes undefeated,
let them play the other undefeated team for the title. Just let them play the game! Go Hokies!
Around the nation
I think FSU will lose at The Swamp, Penn State could very easily lose to Michigan or MSU, can Miami win at Blacksburg? Va. Tech has my attention. Tennessee is rolling, they beat a solid 'Bama team Saturday. Georgia Tech is very overrated ! Mississippi State -- forget about it ! K-State ? They might be overlooked. My Huskers could not stop Major Applewhite -- that kid is so damn tough.
I just wanted to say Penn State showed a lot of class when one of their players came off the sideline mid-play and made a tackle one Chris Daniels of Purdue, stopping what may have been a touchdown. I knew Penn State was good, I just didn't know they got that way by cheating.
I am getting tired of hearing from my fellow Virginia Tech Hokies fans that the Hokies are not getting proper respect. Yes, that may be true somewhat in the past. But we have nothing to complain about now. We are No. 3 and until we beat Florida State or other big dog in a bowl (which we have not done ever), then let's just enjoy the ride.
In a day filled with upsets, my Clemson Tigers had a chance to be the Cinderella, but came away feeling like her jilted step-sisters. Almosts don't count in the win column. I could say wait until next year, but I don't want to be confused with a Gamecock fan.
When is the SEC going to take a serious look at the atrocious officiating taking place this year? Giving Mississippi St. a touchdown when it was obvious to everyone that the running back fell down at the 1-yard line is pitiful. When are the referees going to be held responsible for their mistakes, because we all know that the coaches and players are all held responsible for theirs?
The Vols have the best defense in the country. Look at the teams they have played, and how few points they have let them score. Ask Shaun Alexander how good the run defense is. Ask Florida how good their pass defense is.
Florida State and Penn State should both hope the other finishes perfect so that they don't wind up playing Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl.
It's really sad that Marshall (an undefeated team) got leapfrogged by a team with two losses. Granted Texas beat Nebraska, but an undefeated season still deserves more respect.
It is time to give K-State a little credit. I am not defending the non-conference schedule but they have won when they have had to. Coming back on the road three times and taking out Texas in Austin is no small feat (ask Nebraska). Many talk about K-State' strength of schedule but when compared to VT, it is very comparable. In fact, many of the national pundits have the K-State schedule slightly stronger, however, VT seems to be the darling this year. Obviously the Nebraska game will tell the tale, but let's give some credit now where it is due!
Warrick's return
I think it is a travesty that Peter Warrick was allowed to play on
Saturday. It certainly taints Bobby Bowden's 300th victory. What
was the university's rationale for allowing Warrick to play?
It's a shame Florida State felt it necessary to use their criminal. I was rooting for another FSU national championship until Saturday night. Let's go PSU and VT!
Sooner pride
So why is it that when Oklahoma blows away a Top 15 opponent by over 40 points, they STILL are not ranked? Why should teams with three losses be ranked over them? We already knew the idea of ranking was bogus, but this adds further proof. Oklahoma's two losses come in the fourth quarter after they had been leading, too!
Heisman hype
How is it that Shaun Alexander has one sub-par game against a great Tennessee defense and all of a sudden he's out of the Heisman race? 98 yards rushing, 50 receiving and only one touchdown are definitely low numbers for his standards, but they are far more than what Dayne had against Michigan (88) and Minnesota (80). Now because he had a good game against Michigan State, Dayne's back on top? Might I remind you that Alexander had the exact same rushing total the previous week against an Ole Miss defense that ranked right up there with Michigan State? Shaun Alexander still leads the nation in scoring, all-purpose yards, and is fifth in rushing right behind Ron Dayne. Where is the respect?
LaVar for Heisman!
The Ron Dayne critics can say what they want. The fact is he has only two rushers ahead of him on the all-time career NCAA rushing list. And all of this after sitting out some 2nd halfs because of Badger blowouts. The two ahead of him, who he will pass, and the few he has recently passed have all been rewarded with the Heisman, and so should Ron Dayne.
Sounding off in Starkville
Mississippi State is probably the best team in the country that no one knows about. They have somehow managed to climb all the way to No. 8 in both polls without a descent quarterback. If the offense can just play half as good as the defense has so far then this team will be a force to be reckoned with. We're packing our bags for Atlanta down here in Starkville!
Why is there little to no talk/coverage of Mississippi State? Sure they've had a favorable schedule, but all those years 'Bama rolled thru the SEC no one criticized them. It seems unfair that now this team, which is enjoying consistent success, should be penalized this way.
Aggie angst
As a die-hard Texas A&M football fan, I believe that the amount and quality of talent that is consistently recruited should get us further than an OVERRATED top 10 appearance year after year. Am I the only Aggie that thinks the lackluster performances recently (this decade) are a product of mediocre coaching? Yes, R.C.'s records, yada, yada, yada, but look at the quality of opponents and the records against top 10 teams. Nebraska and K-state were both overrated last year and beating them only proved to further extend a coaching contract that should have ended years ago. Will the Aggies ever get a new head coach?
