No issue is too great, or too small for our attention. And nothing seems to escape the watchful eye of college football fans. Who needs headlines to find out what happened around the country on Saturday? A healthy does of The Fans Speak will get you up to date.
Heisman hopefuls
Who else thinks that University of Virginia's superstar RB, Thomas Jones, should at least be considered a Heisman candidate? He once again proved to be the deciding factor in Virginia's win over 17th ranked BYU, driving over 200 yards in the game.
Will someone please notice Thomas Jones?
Shaun Alexander is the best running back in the country. After seeing Ron Dayne's lackluster performance against Michigan Saturday and Jamal Lewis' lack of performance, Shaun should be closer to the top of the Heisman race than he is.
Ron Dayne's Heisman run is over. The critics will be rough on him because he "couldn't get it done against Michigan." However, anyone who actually watched the game should realize that his offensive line created no holes for him. He had to fight hard just to get to the line of scrimmage on many of his carries. Even the best running back in the country cannot overcome a poor performance by the rest of his offensive unit.
How can Joe Hamilton not be recognized as the best quarterback
in the nation? No other quaterback has recently nor ever will
go 20-25 for over 400 yards of total offense against FSU.
He has 7 touchdowns with 0 interceptions in three games and
plays against the toughest defenses of any of the top
quarterbacks in the nation. Joe, and Georgia Tech, needs to
get some respect for once.
Are people aware that Chad Pennington's stats against Temple
reflect only three quarters of play? Coach Preutt did not learn
everything from his prior employer. Unlike "Run It Up Spurrier"
Coach Pruett takes Chad off the field when the game's outcome
has been decided. How many Heisman candidates are getting their numbers in three quarters?
Poll probe
Who is the lone dummy that continues to vote Va Tech No. 1 each week in the AP poll?
Reason No. 206 why the polls are a disgrace: East Carolina is ranked below Miami (Fla.) in both surveys. Do coaches and writers simply check common sense at the door before compiling their lists? Somebody, help me please.
Why is Nebraska ranked ahead of Texas A&M when Texas A&M had more offensive yards against Southern Miss than did Nebraska?
What are the AP voters smoking? Tennessee and Georgia squeak out a couple of pathetic one-point wins over lame cupcakes and they hold form in the AP Poll. Is the SEC so highly regarded that they don't have to back it up on the field anymore?
Pirate power
East Carolina proved that they have the heart of a champion by coming from behind to beat the 'Canes 27-23 after trailing 23-3 in the third quarter. Though, shouldn't them beating Miami constitute a higher ranking than the 'Canes? I think it does.
Why is East Carolina University still ranked lower than Miami after defeating them? ECU has the better record and evidently a more dominant team. What will it take for ECU to receive the respect they deserve?
SEC second-guessing
When will people see how bad Georgia is this year? They beat Central Florida on penalties and then can't score more than 24 points against them. I am waiting for them to play a real team so voters can see how bad they really are. How can they be ranked No. 11 still after winning against an 0-3 team by one?
Let's hear it for those Dawgs! Their defense sure hunkered down and held UCF when it mattered right? Wait -- NO! UCF handed the football game to UGA on Saturday, and exposed the overrated pups for the weak SEC team that they are.
Tennessee needs to get its act together! This is a highly talented team who has shown a complete lack of maturity and discipline in their last two performances. If they keep that up, they'll get drilled next week against Auburn and certainly in two weeks when the Georgia Bulldogs come calling. On such an experienced team, certainly somebody can step up, stop pointing fingers, and make a play.
Big 12 pride
Iowa State has truly turned its program around this year, and that showed during the first half of Saturday's game against Kansas State. Even though they didn't hang on for the win, they showed that they are for real this year and need to be recognized!
I am an alumni from Oklahoma University, and a lifelong Sooner. I have watched as four different head coaches have taken over the role of "turning the program around". Each time a new coach would come in, all of the die-hard Sooners would toss up a prayer and once again put faith in the promises of those coaches. Each time, reality fell far short of expectations. We Sooners expect to win consistently. In my mind, it is still too early to tell if the Sooners are for real. So far, some great numbers have been posted by a brand new offense and a transfer quarterback. The defense, which has been OU's bright spot over the years, appears to remain solid. By the end of October, we will all know if the Sooners are contenders.
Texas A&M has to be one of the three favorites to make it to the Sugar Bowl. With the Wrecking Crew looking as strong as ever and an improved, more balanced offense, the Ags are poised to make a run. Throw in a favorable schedule and you have all the makings of a great season.
Don't forget the Big East
Finally Corey Moore from VT got to show the rest of the country how good he and the Hokie defense are. Yes, Michael Vick did struggle, but all of his mistakes were easily correctable, and he is only going to get better because he now realizes that his team can win even without him playing well. As far as the defense goes, they showed there's none better in the nation. I know it's still early, but they've got a legitimate shot.
Get on the Stanford bandwagon
Why is Stanford not ranked in any poll, when it beat three teams in a row by a combined margin of 75 points, the last two ranked?
Of all the also-rans this week, the most deserving of a top-25 ranking is Stanford. Think about it -- are there 25 teams out there that can take an extra-large beating at Texas, and then play hackysack with the rear ends of three conference teams in a row? Yes, everyone could see that win against Washington State coming a mile away. But Arizona and UCLA, in succession? C'mon, voters... give the Cardinal some love.
This 'n' that
As a Purdue Boilermaker fan, I am ecstatic about the success we've achieved this year. I've even more impressed by Joe Tiller's decision not to score against Northwestern to show the pollsters a larger margin of victory.
It's time for Roy Kramer to take the automatic BCS Bowl bid away from the PAC 10 and The Big East and give it to the Mountain West and C-USA. They deserve it more! |
