The Fans Speak

Championship Saturday provided plenty of news. Now here's the commentary. Take a look at some of the responses from ESPN.com users:

I have one word for this weekend in college football: unbelievable! Once again college football proved why it is the best sport around. The underdogs rallied, the titans crumbled, the BCS counts its blessings. What a dream season this has been.

Eric Reichle
South Bend, Ind.

Saturday was the most exciting day of college football I have ever seen. Playoff spirit, upsets, what more could you ask for? A 16-team playoff. Wouldn't that be nice?

Ray Webb
Erwin, Tenn.

Quick question: if Florida State beats Tennessee, who's the national champion? FSU doesn't deserve it -- they were manhandled by a mediocre N.C. State team. UCLA doesn't deserve it -- they lost to a Miami team still a couple years away from serious competition. Ohio State? No -- they got beat at home by Michigan State. 'Nuff said. So to me it comes down to Kansas State and Tennessee. And unfortunately, K-State isn't being given a chance to prove itself against a top-tier team. What a crock.

Derek Traini
Bethesda, Md.

The BCS is such a joke. I detest the system with a passion. I don't even want to watch the championship game because I know the two best teams are not playing in it. I've never hated the college football championship system more than I do this year.

Jeremy Grigsby
Tallmadge, Ohio

As much as we all took turns bad-mouthing the BCS, it has ended up doing what it was intended to do. It also created a huge ammount of conversation and interest over the course of the year. Perfect? No. The best thing until I-A finds a way to keep the bowls happy and have a real playoff? Probably.

Eric Schmidt
Boone, N.C.

The BCS rankings haven't changed anything. It all boils down to sportswriter fetishes, politics, and big money. It's a shame that the national college football champion is chosen in a less objective way than for synchronized swimming and ballroom dancing. Let the college football champion be decided like football at any other level -- by head-to-head playoffs.

Steve Hollingworth
Los Angeles

I have lost complete respect for the BCS and the whole bowl system. How can a team that has been a top 5 team all season not get invited to a BCS bowl? It's not about football anymore, it has become a game of politics and money. Kansas State was on the verge of a the national title one moment and because of a double-overtime loss they go to the Alamo Bowl -- against an unranked team! That should be enough to convince anyone that a playoff is the only fair way to settle the national title.

Will Boone
Manhattan Kan.

I am a Tennessee fan so I guess I should not complain, but what happened to Kansas State during the bowl selection process is criminal. We fans keep hearing that the bowls are the best thing that ever happened to college football. I challenge anyone within the system to explain how Kansas State's Bowl selection is "good for football."

John Myers
Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Whoever doesn't see any problem with the BCS doesn't know much about college football. K-State's perfect season is marred by a defeat by a top 10 team in double overtime, and they're going to the Alamo Bowl. How many teams playing in better bowls lost to lesser teams? And lost more than once? Still, though, K-State's Bill Snyder shows class by calling it an honor to go to San Antonio. It's been a great ride, 'Cats. Thanks for a wonderful and exciting season.

Connie Logsdon
Tempe, Ariz.

I can't stand these Kansas State fans. Their team was overrated all year, winning in an overrated conference, and playing Sisters of Mercy State in non-conference games. They didn't ever deserve No. 1 or No. 2, and finally A&M showed this to everyone. And now Wildcat fans complain about not getting the bowl they want. They had control of their own destiny when they heard about the Miami upset, and their leader gave away the game with that fumble. They choked and when you do that you lose control of postseason placement.

Joey Cooper
Baltimore

Why can't K-State just accept it and shut up already? They lost the championship game. Enough said. Obviously the bowl committees saw the Wildcats' schedule and gave them the respect they deserve.

Armand Alacbay
Charlottesville, Va.

I am a Florida State fan so I am very happy about the BCS selection; however, I can't understand Kansas State and Ohio State's disappointment. Get over it! A few years ago, BYU was left out of the national championship after a Cinderella season like Kansas State, and Tulane was left out of it this year although they were unbeaten. But who did they play? No one, really. But who did Kansas State or Ohio State beat this year to deserve a shot at the title more than Florida State? No one.

James Hannigan
Saint Marys, Ga.

The BCS rating system should be modified to account for the additional championship games played by some conferences. The teams that must play in these games should be "rewarded" in the rating system for having to play these additional games. It's not quite fair that a team like FSU, which does not play in a conference championship game, can simply sit back, relax, and watch all the other top rated teams beat their brains out, then move into the championship game.

Mike White
Augusta, Ga.

Everyone says Kansas State was overrated. Maybe it's that Texas A&M was underrated. A&M's losses were to No. 2 Florida State, which they lost to the first game of the year, and to arch-rival Texas, in Austin, on Ricky Williams' record-breaking day. It was not a shock that Texas A&M beat Kansas State.

Bradley Bode
College Station, Texas

Tennessee does it again. Call it guts, luck, heart, or whatever you want, but there isn't a coach or team in the country that wouldn't buy some if you could bottle it up. And somebody finally give credit to Phil Fulmer, he's the top coach in Division I hands down.

Bob Adams
Baltimore, Md.

Why does Florida State get to go to the Fiesta Bowl? What makes them better than any of the other one loss teams? The answer is nothing. Ohio State should go to Tempe. The Buckeyes are being penalized for losing later in the season than FSU. That is not fair.

Geoff Urda
Endwell, N.Y.

I am just curious how it is possible that in the polls Florida State is ranked higher than Ohio State. I am not saying that Florida State is not a good team, they are a great team. But I sincerely don't think they are better than Ohio State this year.

Jeff St. Louis
Columbus, Ohio

Will somebody please tell me what that incessant whining sound is that I hear coming from Columbus? You lost to an unranked team, in your own front yard. Florida State lost on the road to a team that is at least bowl-bound. And we all remember what happened when these teams last met. Additionally, the two teams who did the upsetting on Saturday have something in common. Florida State has scoreboard on both Miami (26-14), and Texas (23-14). Face it Columbus, you have a great 9-week (weak?) team.

Theodore Davis
Madison, Wisc.

I cannot tell you how happy the folks down here in Seminole country are! Now the nation will see the best team play for the national championship. Sorry, Vols, its not going to be a "UCLA cupcake walk" for you. You now have to play a real team!

Jeff Dow
Tallahassee, Fla.

To all the naysayers in the national media -- we told you so! Week in and week out, Tennessee received no credit for its amazing perfomances on the field. At 12-0, it doesn't get any better!

Heather Stokely
Knoxville, Tenn.

Thanks to Miami, which showed that UCLA is too overrated to be playing for the national championship, and to Texas A&M, which exposed the fact that K-State played a total creampuff schedule this year and didn't belong either. Ironically, FSU found itself cheering for two teams that it beat earlier this season.

Kendal Van Dyke
Tallahassee, Fla.

Weeeeee're baaaackk! Three years of probation and reduced scholarships couldn't keep the Canes down. Miami's win over UCLA gave the country a little taste of things to come in '99. To the haters, sorry buy the Canes are back. Butch Davis has resurrected the program abd we're one step closer to glory.

Chris Bello
San Diego

Miami's win shows that the Big East has been underrated all year. Virginia Tech, Syracuse, West Virginia and Miami all had good years and can play with anyone.

Mike Lambrechts
Ashburn, Va.

Dat Ngyuen is awesome! No question that he should be the Lombardi and Butkus award winner. Despite critics who question his size, he will make some NFL team very happy with his relentless style. Seems that a guy named Singletary had similar comments made about him awhile back.

Jim Welsh
Houston

I would just like to congratulate Branndon Stewart for his brave performance in the Big 12 Championship game. He has taken so much heat these past couple of years in College Staion and nationwide. I was proud to see him cut the Kansas State defense apart in the fourth quarter. On Jan. 1 I hope he ends his Aggie career in a great way.

James Carman
College Station, Texas

The refereeing in college is getting to be just as bad as it is in the NFL.
