Working with the formula

From ESPN SportsCenter's Extra Points

Like it or not, the controversial Bowl Championship Series is here through at least the 2001 season. Critics -- and there are lots of them -- say the BCS rankings formula has too many flaws. Well, guess what? BCS inventors feel your pain.

Charles Bloom, the SEC assistant commissioner who helped devise the formula, said the system will be dissected at season's end. Don't be surprised if the BCS goes from three computer rankings, to as many as five.

Recruiting success
December is a huge recruiting month. Last year, UCLA was considered to have the best incoming class. But a high recruiting ranking doesn't guarantee instant stardom.

For instance, look at the top-five rated incoming freshmen on recruiting guru Allen Wallace's 1998 list:

WALLACE'S RANK SCHOOL THIS SEASON:
 1. WR David Givens Notre Dame He lettered, but finished with zero receptions.
 2. DE Dennis Johnson Kentucky He started the last six games, had 26 tackles, but still got pushed around.
 3. WR Marquise Walker Michigan He played in 11 games, but only had four receptions.
 4. QB Ronald Curry North Carolina He started four games and is the projected starter in 1999.
 4. FS Chris Hope Florida State No starts, but he played in all 12 games.

Citrus state of affairs
Florida and Miami haven't played each other since 1987. But thanks to a new NCAA proposal, the Florida-Miami rivalry could be up and running by 2002.

If passed in January, the legislation would allow Division I-A programs to schedule a 12th regular season game in 2002, 2003 and again in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2019. If that happens, Miami and Florida will try to make a deal.

And speaking of the Gators, they're holding out for a BCS bid to the Orange Bowl or a Citrus Bowl invitation.

Where's the beef?
Arizona's Trung Canidate averages 7.3 yards per carry to lead the nation. He also averages 15 cheeseburgers after every game. Canidate buys the burgers for Yusuf Scott, Arizona's 320-pound All-American at right guard.
