The Fans Speak

The last weekend of the regular season produced plenty of excitement. As we head to a Saturday of conference championship games, here's a look at some of the responses from ESPN.com users:

I think this was one of the worst weekends for college football the whole year. Some weekends are designated as "judgement weekend" and "rivalry weekend" -- this should have been blowout weekend. I have never seen this many lopsided games.

Aaron Teachout
Charlotte, N.C.

This past weekend goes to show just how messed up the current BCS System is. With one game left for all three teams, UCLA, Kansas State and Tennessee are all undefeated and probably will be at the end of next week. We need a playoff system. The one in I-AA is as good as any. But the chance that there will be two undefeated teams at the end of the year goes to show we need a new deal.

T. O'Connor Johnson
Richmond, Va.

One thing the BCS has done is make more games meaningful. Miami/Syracuse and Texas/Texas A&M not only had meaning for those teams, but for K-State and UCLA as well. And USC beating Notre Dame helped UCLA. Not so sure strength of schedule should be one-fourth of the total BCS pie, but it does add intrigue to more and more games.

Sean Dinsmore
San Jose, Calif.

I think that one should question the validity of a computer ranking (the New York Times) that places a team with one loss above three undefeated teams, regardless of strength of schedule. These rankings should be based on the entire season, and a team with one loss should not be ranked above teams like Tennessee UCLA and KSU. This ultimately hurts K-State the most in the BCS becuase of the 50 percent of the lower two computer rankings rule. UCLA essentially gains 0.58 points by dropping the 4 and replacing this with 2.25. If the season ends and KSU ends up 0.58 points behind UCLA, then perhaps the NYT Rankings are to blame.

Oklahoma City, Okla.

As the bowl picture becomes complete, how can the bowl system be considered just when a 6-5 North Carolina team goes to a bowl and a 10-1 Miami (Ohio) team looks like it will stay home for the holidays? Remember, Miami beat UNC in Chapel Hill to start the season.

Guy Liesch
Cincinnati, Ohio

I know the rest of the country may think that Tennessee should have beat Vandy this weekend worse than it did, but pitching a shutout was not on the menu. The Vols played without their two top Linebackers (Al Wilson and Raynoch Thompson). Bottom line: Tennessee deserves its No. 1 ranking. Having beaten four top 25 teams (Florida, Georgia, Syracuse and Arkansas), I think of no team which is more deserving.

Drew Conklin
Knoxville, Tenn.

The way it looks like this year, the Wildcats of Kansas State may get ripped off from a chance of competing for the national championship due to the BCS. Even though KSU has a weak non-conference schedule (one that was made up years ago), the games we played in were dominated by the 'Cats. Even though we seem to get respect from the ESPN/USA Today and AP polls -- ranked 1 and 2, respectively -- the computer ranking BCS seems to harm K-State. Look for K-State dominating Texas A&M for the Big XII Championship.

Why do I love college football so much? I can think of one great reason why -- Ricky Williams! Congratulations Ricky.

Jason Summers
Oviedo, Fla.

Ricky Williams closed out a storybook career at the University of Texas and helped put the program back on the college football map. I have watched him since my first days as a Longhorn freshman, and a tear comes to my eye when I realize his time in Austin is over. He is truly a remarkable student athlete and individual. He embodies everything fans wish for in a gridiron hero, both on and off the field, and is more than deserving of college football's highest individual honor.

Garett Willig
Houston

Ricky Williams -- Heisman. Enough said!

Blair McCoppin
Austin, Texas

After years of trash talking, field stomping and just plain classless behavior by the Miami Hurricanes, I have to say that 66-13 put a smile on every Orangeman's face from San Francisco to South Beach. Miami said they didn't consider the 'Cuse to be a rivalry. I can see why.

Andre von Hoyer, II
Los Gatos, Calif.

What a way for Donovan McNabb to end a tremendous Carrier Dome career with a 66-13 thumping of the hated Miami Hurricanes. While he won't win the Heisman, McNabb deserves to be invited to New York City as much as anyone. Anybody who has watched an S.U. game this year knows that he is one of the finest college QBs in the history of the game. Don't just look at the stats, watch him play and you will see all that he does.

Chip Russell
Arlington, Va.

Get the Big East out of there! There are much more deserving teams that should be in the BCS than Syracuse. The BCS relies on history to determine what conferences are in. Miami is the only reason the Big East is in the picture, and Miami is having problems. Give us a playoff! Every other collegiate sport has one!

Marcus Grande
College Station, Texas

Mississippi State finally makes it to the Big Dance in Atlanta. The Bulldogs' win over Ole Miss finished the job they started last season. Whether State wins or loses to Tennessee, the Dawgs are SEC West champs! Congratulations to Coach Sherrill & his players.

Peyton Smith
Starkville, Miss.

The Battle of Virginia was a classic game that had fans of both schools and football fans in general on the edge of their seats. The game featured a first half domination on the part of the Hokies, followed by an epic comeback by the Hoos in the second half. Games like this don't happen in the pros very often, which is why we should savor the fact that the NCAA seems to come up with a few of these barnburners every year.

Jason D. Ward
Pittsburgh

USC is on its way up. Paul Hackett is going to bring Southern Cal back to its glory days.

Mathieu Faltys
Los Angeles

Inept Bob Davie has nobody to blame but himself for Saturday's loss. USC is a pathetic team that a Jarious Jackson-led Notre Dame would roll over. Davie's inept strategy of killing the ball against LSU resulted in Jarious Jackson's injury. It's sad when you have to pray every week that your coach will not lose you the game.

Timothy Bellaire
Charlottesville, Va.

Hey Irish Haters -- I bet you're happy now! At least we don't have to hear you gripe about Notre Dame's BCS chances anymore. Maybe some of you will even go far enough to acknowledge the fact that the team did win nine games this year. If UCLA can be headed to Tempe with their close-calls, then the Irish deserve the same respect. A win is a win. And we've got nine of 'em. Great season, boys.

Tim Kearney
Chicago

Well, as expected, Tulane is going to get screwed out of any chance at a national championship, or to be in a BCS game. I guess I should not be suprised. After all, just because schools in the MAC, WAC, Big West and C-USA are in Division I-A, why should that mean that they should have the same opportunities as the rest of the country? Still, it always amazes me. Someone please answer me this one question: Will these other schools ever be given a chance to compete for players, television time, and overall exposure nationally.

Kevin Peabody
Ionia, Mich.

Although it was a losing effort, Torry Holt won the battle against Dre Bly in the NCSU-UNC rivalry game. He gained 180 yards, with over 150 against Bly in man coverage. Bly should have gone pro last year. His stock has definitely dropped this year. He was burned too many times, often by receivers less talented than Holt.

Chris Humphrey
Raleigh, N.C.

I just want to give a shout out for Marc Bulger's performance for West Virginia against Pitt this past Friday. It was a homecoming for Bulger and he showed the fans what kind of a quarterback he is by throwing for over 400 yards in about three quarters. Bulger is probably the most underrated QB in college football. He has broken almost every school record in only 2 years. I think it's time he got some press.

Eric Elliott
Morgantown, West Va.

Congratulations to the Tulane Green Wave for an outstanding season. Shaun King and the Wave are 11-0 and headed to the Liberty Bowl. BYU better be ready, because here we come.

Jeremy Bower
New Orleans, La.

As an Arizona fan I have never been pulling for a team so hard as I am pulling for UCLA on Saturday. I want to spend Jan. 1 in Pasadena, and if it means Kansas St. gets screwed, so be it. Arizona in the Rose Bowl will be very nice.

Jeff Onze
Fredericksburg, Va.

Penn State -- welcome back! The emotion finally came through. Coach, I am surprised at how long it took you to get angry but I was gratified to see it a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for the season and good luck in the bowl.

E.J. Easton
Atlanta

It looks like K-State (being the best team in the nation) will be playing the second best team in the nation. The problem is they won't be playing for the championship. They will be playing FSU in the Sugar Bowl.

Shawn Minihan
Lawrence, Kan.

It has been a great season for the Razorbacks. Although they fumbled around a little at Tennessee and Mississippi State, they have proven they are a top 10 team. Next year the Razorbacks will challenge for the SEC title. Much thanks to Houston Nutt, who gave us a team to be proud of and an excellent example of what unity and a family atmosphere can mean to college sports as a whole. I look forward to seeing the Razorbacks take on Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Jefferson Baker
Little Rock, Ark.

So Georgia Tech finally stung the Bulldogs, eh? Saturday's game epitomized the essence of the Jacket/Bulldog tradition, and also proved that both teams are capable of reaching the next level in only a matter of time.

Ben Sheffield
Piedmont College, Ga.

Michael Bishop will be the most exciting player in the NFL. His raw strength and ability, obsession with winning and pure love for the game is unparalleled in football at all levels. At the least, this phenomenal football leader and competitor should be co-awarded the prize for best college football player. A player of Bishop's caliber only comes along a few times in a fan's lifetime.

Tom Ratliff
Manhattan, Kan.
