Coachspeak 101 -- what they're saying this week

ESPN.com

Florida and Florida State meet for 43rd time on Saturday. Florida leads the all-time series 26-14-2, but the Seminoles have run up an 8-4-1 mark in the last 11 years. The two teams will meet for the seventh time in five seasons, including two games in the Sugar Bowl. Bobby Bowden owns a 12-11-1 record vs. the Gators, while Steve Spurrier is 4-5-1 against FSU.

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden

The overall state of the Seminoles
"I really don't feel much better after watching the films (of the Wake Forest game). That's probably the worst I've felt since the NC State game because we looked so futile at times with the biggest game of the year coming up.
 Bobby Bowden
FSU coach Bobby Bowden is 12-11-1 against the Gators.

"I felt that last week against Virginia everything was coming together. The offense was getting there and the defense was playing great and our special teams were good.

"Our defense had a good day other than penalties against Wake, but I just could not believe how easily they got to our passer. They did have to blitz to do it, but they put pressure on him so easily. That is very disappointing.

"Just looking at their game last week against South Carolina and our game if we both played the same way they (Florida) would beat us by a good 10-14 points. We've got to play better. We've nearly got to go back to square one offensively."

The Florida State quarterback situation
"One thing we did against Wake was not allow our quarterback enough time to throw. I didn't think they could do that. When we needed some great catches we didn't get them and when we had a great run it would come back because of a penalty.

"We're right back to where we were when Weinke broke in. The quarterbacks have the potential to do it, but we're just finding out what they can do. We found out how far they are against Wake and it is not as far as I had hoped, but it's normal. I think we know what to concentrate on to do our best against Florida."

Florida quarterback Doug Johnson
"Doug Johnson has a great arm and is a great talent. Doug went to our camps and I really liked him. What he's doing I thought I saw when he was very young. I've never seen him as accurate as he was against USC. But there is not a better teacher in the country than Steve Spurrier for the quarterbacks. I've got to figure a way to blitz Spurrier."

The Florida State defense
"The biggest difference between our defense this year and the previous three or four years is that our secondary is playing much better. In years past if a quarterback avoided a sack, he could find an open receiver. This year we have covered much better, but we have not gotten the same pressure on the quarterback either."

The Florida defense
"Their defense is just outstanding. Great athletes among the front seven and they are very much like us in that respect. They're strength is that defensive line and the defense as a whole."

Florida coach Steve Spurrier

The overall state of the Gators
"We came out of the South Carolina game in good shape injury-wise, and that was very important. Hopefully we will get Reggie McGrew and Willie Cohens back this week in the defensive line. We were pretty thin there last Saturday.

"We planned on running the ball more, and really thought Eugene McCaslin would get 15-20 carries. However we just kept firing away and when it was all over, Eugene had only carried the ball seven times. That’s just how the day turned out, but we did have some big plays in the passing game and Travis McGriff had a wonderful day with 13 catches for 222 yards. We wanted to get Nafis Karim more involved but the passes didn’t come his way very often.

"McCaslin is our best tailback right now. Terry Jackson’s ankle sprain is still bothering him. When you get a sprain like that it takes a long time to come back. Hopefully Terry will be a little bit better this week and able to play more against FSU.

The Florida State defense
"FSU is the number one defensive team in the country, and they have a lot of talent in every area. Obviously it will be a big challenge up there and what we’re thinking about is trying to beat those guys in order to keep ourselves in contention for whatever else might be out there later."

Florida State receiver Peter Warrick
" Peter Warrick is a fantastic talent for them. He will probably be one of the first picks in the NFL draft, along with our Jevon Kearse, if they come out early. He is a big time player as a receiver and kick returner, and it wouldn’t surprise us to see him at quarterback some in this game."

The Florida offense
Since our last game up there I have become a big believer in the shotgun offense. It helps you get the ball off. You can usually get if off even if you don’t block everyone real good."
