Cavs best of rest in ACC

By Mike Gottfried
Special to ESPN.com

Sure, Florida State has already lost to North Carolina State. But Virginia will be the best ACC team Florida State is going to play this season.

 Aaron Brooks
Virginia quarterback Aaron Brooks will have a tough time eluding Florida State's pass rush.

The Cavaliers have the best offensive line Florida State will face this year. That's the strength of Virginia's offense. And they have an excellent, 1,000-yard rusher in Thomas Jones. He likes to run between the tackles, and that's what you have to do against Florida State because the Seminoles have so much defensive speed. The Cavaliers will run quick-hitting plays like traps and power plays inside.

Virginia will use a scheme similar to what it used last week. The Cavs had tremendous success running the ball against Wake Forest, gaining 270 yards on the ground. Terrence Wilkins is the only big-play receiver Florida State worries about. Virginia has to find different ways to get Wilkins loose, because he's much better than the other receivers.

The Cavaliers will move quarterback Aaron Brooks around with sprint-outs, waggles and bootlegs so he's not always in the same place. One thing about Florida State: If a quarterback drops back into the same place every time, the Seminoles will kill him with the rush.

Defensively, Virginia will use a lot of zone blitzing. The Cavs feel like they can pressure Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke inside. They want to get Weinke to slide either way and not stay in the pocket. They will run heavy zone coverage with a lot of bump and run on the receivers, with the free safety in the middle of the field because they don't want to give up the big play. The Cavs will also blitz with linebacker Wali Reiner a lot, although they feel they can get a four-man rush.

They're concerned about the secondary with Anthony Poindexter out of the ball game because they match up every place except against Florida State's wide receivers.

Florida State's offense will run a lot of shotgun and three-wideout formations. The Seminoles will try to figure out out how Virginia intends to play their middle receiver, Marvin Minnis, because that will force Virginia to either use an extra defensive back or linebacker. Off the shotgun, Florida State will run the draw, and then the Seminoles will try to get the ball to Peter Warrick like they did against North Carolina. Against one-on-one coverage, Weinke will find Warrick on underneath routes and see if he can make something happen after the catch.

The Seminoles' defense has a relentless pass rush. They worked hard this week in practice with ends Tony Bryant and Roland Seymour on trying to contain and get to Virginia quarterback Aaron Brooks. They feel they have to pressure Brooks and keep him between the tackles, even though they know Virginia wants to get Brooks outside a lot.

The Seminoles will gang up on Wilkins with a lot of bump and run, which they're good at, especially cornerback Tay Cody. Wilkins will be the focal point for Florida State's defensive backs. If they can match up with Wilkins on the outside, the Seminoles will try to get another safety near the scrimmage to slow down Jones and the running game.

Florida State is now playing as well as any team in the country. The Seminoles have so many weapons. They don't have any name stars, but they are emerging, like Seymour and inside linebacker Brian Allen on defense. They have so much depth that they wear down ACC teams in the third and fourth quarters and could do the same to Virginia.
