Sibling rivalry in the job hunt

By Gene Wojciechowski
From ESPN SportsCenter's Extra Points

There is a chance -- in fact a decent chance -- that brother Terry Bowden, who just resigned at Auburn, and Tulane's Tommy Bowden could compete for the same jobs this offseason.

A lot of people spend time looking at a quarterback's completion percentage to determine whether he is an accurate passer or not. Fans would be well rewarded to look more closely at the quarterback's performance during the game to gauge his accuracy.

Watch where the quarterback puts the ball for the catch. When the receiver catches the ball, is he immediately able to turn up the field and run? Or does the receiver have to reach back for the ball? Does he have to jump or does he dive?

An accurate quarterback will put the ball where the receiver can catch it and do something after the catch. It's not enough to just complete the pass. The quarterback has to get the ball to the receiver in a position to do something after the catch.

West Virginia quarterback Marc Bulger is usually right on the numbers, giving his receivers a chance to run with the ball. By and large, Joe Germaine is pretty good about that, but he wasn't last week at Northwestern.

That's a critical way to look at quarterbacks, and it will give observers an insight into whether a quarterback is an accurate passer.

Of course, a lot depends on the tenuous futures of Brad Scott at South Carolina, Tommy West at Clemson and John Blake at Oklahoma. All three of those coaches are in jeopardy of losing their jobs.

Meanwhile, Terry Bowden's attorney, Rick Davis, is putting the finishing touches on a settlement package with Auburn. Those negotiations must be interesting, especially since Davis is a former Alabama defensive back.

Let's play two

Not only could Ohio State face UCLA for the national championship in the Jan. 4 Fiesta Bowl, but in one of the great scheduling quirks, the Buckeyes will open next season with UCLA at the old Horseshoe. Thank you, football gods.

No pain, no gain

How tough is Tulane's Shaun King? Tough enough to play with a broken bone in his left wrist. Tough enough to refuse to take a pain killer or even aspirin to dull the constant pain. Tough enough that he leads the nation in passing efficiency despite having to wear a soft cast and brace on the swollen wrist.

To help protect the wrist, Tulane coaches tell King to line up a little bit left of the center on the shotgun formation. That way he can catch the ball easier with his right hand.

Passing grade

Thanks to Tim Couch and Chris Redman, the Commonwealth of Kentucky is now the capital of Division I-A passing. Need proof? Well, if you combined the total touchdown passes of Ohio, Army, Rice, TCU, Maryland, North Texas, Illinois, Baylor, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Penn State, Alabama and Missouri it still wouldn't equal the 47 touchdowns throw by Kentucky's Couch and Louisville's Redman. If you lost count, that was 15 schools in all.
