Coachspeak 101 -- what they're saying this week

ESPN.com

The Tennessee Volunteers and Georgia Bulldogs will be meeting for the 28th time Saturday, which also marks the sixth straight year the teams have played. Tennessee has won the last seven meetings, the longest by either team in the series. Here's what the coaches had to say this week.

Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer

Jamal Lewis's season-ending injury
"It’s obviously a great loss at the tailback position with Jamal Lewis. He’s truly one of the best, if not the best, we’ve had at that position at Tennessee. It’s a tough loss for us. With that kind of loss, as has happened in the past, that kind of adversity, there are opportunities for some other people to step up. I expect our guys to do that, not just at that position, but at all positions. In 1985, we lost Tony Robinson and won the SEC Championship because a lot of people played really hard and together. In 1990, it was the same scenario with Chuck Webb, a really outstanding football player. Tony Thompson stepped up and filled his shoes. A lot of people on those two teams pulled together to do that. We’re looking forward to the response of this team and, so far, as of yesterday, we had a very good and intense Monday practice."

Quarterback Tee Martin's performance
“Tee Martin has done well with what we’ve asked him to do. The guy’s 4-0 and has managed our offense very well when we opened it up some and let him play a little more against Houston, throwing four TD passes. When you lose a great player and other players have to pick up the slack, we obviously will open it up more. When you have a tight end in the game, you’re particularly limited with the numbers of receivers to throw it to and opportunities to throw it to those guys in a lot of ways. We were leaning on our best player, Jamal, and now we’ll lean on our next best players, Tee and the receiving corps. That’s not to say we’re going to keep our balance in our offense."

Replacements for Lewis
"Travis Stephens and Travis Henry both are fine backs. We’ll take a look at Shawn Bryson back there in certain situations and do some things because he has played the position in case we have an emergency. We will be back to more open sets and doing more things with the football. Cosey Coleman will go back inside to guard and Josh Tucker will go to tackle. That gives us a solid group together as we prepare for Georgia."

Analyzing Georgia
“Georgia is an interesting team in the way they approach things offensively. Their quarterback is a really fine athlete, who is making a lot of plays for them by passing and running the football. They have a solid receiving corps, which becomes special when Champ Bailey goes to receiver. He’s truly one of the best football players I’ve seen on film in a long time. He’s a very special player on both sides of the ball, but you notice it more on offense. They have a big, physical offensive line. Their tight ends can catch and run and do some good things. There’s a lot of big play potential on their offensive team. It will be a great challenge for our defense. The defense needs to continue to play as well as they have and that gives us our best chance to win."

Analyzing Georgia's defense
“Defensively, they have a very fine front. They play a lot of people. Orantes Grant, their linebacker, is one of the best defenders in the conference. We thought he was special last year and he’s playing even better this year. They’re very solid in the secondary and in the kicking game. It should be a great football game down there.”

Georgia coach Jim Donnan

Georgia outlook
"Our team plays each week, and they have matured in that respect. We've got to play and come off the big wins and those that are not so big. I don't talk to our team in terms of winning and losing, but rather about playing their best and up to their potential -- the rest takes care of itself."

The loss of Tennessee's Lewis
"Jamal Lewis is a great player, a spectacular back for Tennessee. It's always tough for anybody to get injured, and it's certainly something that they'll have to overcome, but he's got a great future ahead of him in the NFL along with the rest of his time at Tennessee. We've got to make sure that (the loss of Lewis) adds to our preparation. They will have to alter their plan in Lewis' absence, and we're not sure what that change will be."

Georgia standout cornerback/receiver Champ Bailey
"I'm surprised that he's been able to be successful playing as many plays as he has. We were originally hoping to use him as a decoy, but he's just so good. One of the biggest things we say on the sidelines is 'Where's Champ?'. There's no set rate of how much he's going to do, but since he's playing such multiple roles, we make sure to use what he does best and get it called."

What it takes to beat the Volunteers
"Tennessee has done a great job all year at winning. They're 4-0 and have won a lot of close games. They know what to do to win. Tennessee has good athletes with good speed. For two years they've beat us decisively. Since I've been here, we've done a poor job of defending them. They've attacked us and their defense has kept us out of the end zone. They've got good players who play hard and are physical."
