Recruiting: regional reports

By Bobby Burton

Status reports and regional updates on visits and commitments from players around the country:

ATLANTIC
Clay Roberson (Bethel, N.C.) became North Carolina's ninth verbal commitment of the recruiting campaign last week. Roberson, a 6-4, 215-pound defensive end chose the Tar Heels over North Carolina State, Georgia and East Carolina.

While Roberson solidified his choice, another Tar Heel commitment, Mike Waddell (Rockingham, N.C.), opened recruiting's equivalent of Pandora's Box.

Though he remains committed to the Tar Heels, Waddell is still looking at other schools, specifically Florida State and Florida.

"I'm just looking around right now," said Waddell, who has already scheduled a December official visit to Florida State, "in case something falls through with North Carolina."

EAST
Penn State picked up a commitment from Horace Dodd (Hamden, Conn.). Dodd, a running back and one of the best prospect in Connecticut, made an official visit to State College on Sept. 5 for the Nittany Lions' game with Southern Miss.

Dodd was originally scheduled to visit Notre Dame that weekend for its game with Michigan. But Dodd had to cancel those plans because his plane ticket to South Bend was on Northwest Airlines. At that time, the Northwest was on strike.

Lineman Matt Morgan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has scheduled official visits to two schools-Morgan will see Kentucky on Nov. 14 and North Carolina on Dec. 4.

Morgan, who is 6-7, 290 pounds, plays at Plum High School.

MIDLANDS
Nebraska added two commitments last week to bring its total to nine for the campaign.

The Huskers received pledges from Shaun Coleman (Aurora, Colo.), a quarterback who was recruited to play safety or linebacker, and Trevor Johnson (Omaha, Neb.), a tight end.

Coleman is also one of the top baseball prospects in the country. Many insiders expect him to be either a first- or second-round pick in April's amateur draft.

Colorado has three commitments, the latest coming from lineman Vince Mitchell (Denver, Colo.). Mitchell, a 6-0, 245-pound center, expects to be moved to defense in college. Mitchell runs a 4.7-second 40-yard dash.

MIDWEST
B.J. Askew (Cincinnati, Ohio) committed to Michigan last week. His pledge gives the Wolverines nine already this year.

Askew plays running back and linebacker but was recruited exclusively as a defensive player.

Of the nine Wolverine commitments, each have attended a Wolverine summer camp or made an unofficial visit to the Ann Arbor campus.

Anthony Floyd (Youngstown, Ohio), who played wide receiver last year and is being recruited for that position by colleges, has switched positions for his senior year.

Floyd, whose brother Antwann walked-on at Penn State, is playing tailback this year. Apparently, that hasn't cause his stock to slip. Penn State, West Virginia, Michigan State, Syracuse and Pittsburgh have offered him a scholarship and are among his favorite schools.

SOUTHEAST
One of the South's best running backs has scheduled an official visit. Santonio Beard (Nashville, Tenn.) says he will make an official visit to Alabama for the Crimson Tide's clash with Florida on Oct. 3.

Beard is also considering Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio State and Florida State but has yet to scheduled any other visits.

Trey White (Monroe, La.), the son of former NFL receiver Sammie White, has scheduled two of his official visits. White plans to visit Miami on Dec. 4 and Oklahoma State on Dec. 11.

Tennessee, not the Hurricanes or Cowboys, however, is the team to beat according to White

"I've followed them (Tennessee) for a long while. I like their offense. It just seems like they would be a good fit for me," said White.

SOUTHWEST
Linebacker Cory Redding (Houston, Tex.) says he has narrowed his choices to three schools -- Arizona, Colorado and Texas.

Redding, one of the nation's most heavily recruited players, recently eliminated Florida State, Southern Cal and Ohio State from consideration.

"I'm trying to get things down to a workable number," said Redding. "It's nothing against those other schools, I just want to focus my attention on winning football games right now."

Stanford, Colorado and Washington have scheduled official visits with Andre Brooks (Brazoswood, Tex.). Brooks, a 6-4, 280-pound lineman, plans to visit Stanford Dec. 4, Colorado Dec. 11 and Washington Dec. 18. LSU, Texas A&M and Syracuse are also in the hunt.

WEST
Aaron Graham (Bakersfield, Calif.) has scheduled three of his official visits. Graham travels to USC on Dec. 4, Washington on Dec. 11 and California on Dec. 18.

Graham, a 6-1, 230-pound linebacker, says he also plans to visit Arizona but has yet to set a visit.

Defensive lineman Cory Kipp (Riverside, Calif.) is one of seven recruits who have lined up visits to Arizona State for Jan. 15. Kipp is also considering Southern Cal, Nebraska, Iowa and Arizona.

Shane Lehman (Corona, Calif.) has also set up an official visit. The lineman will travel to Notre Dame on Dec. 11. Lehman's play this year has done nothing to detract recruiters. In his first game, Lehman totaled 13 pancake blocks. UCLA, Ohio State, USC, Colorado, Washington, Washington State and Nebraska also are in the hunt.
