Player of the YearChris SimmsSon of two-time Super Bowl winner Phil Simms. Has started for the varsity since his freshman campaign. Led team to state semifinals as a sophomore and state championship as a junior. Left-hander who can throw with either touch or velocity. Has an understanding of the game beyond his years. Completed 94 of 149 passes (63.1 percent) for 1,897 yards and 22 touchdowns as a junior. Has narrowed his choices to six schools -- Penn State, Michigan, Florida State, Ohio State, Texas, and Tennessee. The Nittany Lions have been wooing him the longest and JoePa's' decision to remain at State College through 2002 does nothing to hurt their chances. Still, Simms says he remains open-minded, "I want to visit all of the schools before I really say I have one favorite or another. There are some schools where I went to camp (Penn State and Ohio State)," said Simms, "that I have a better feel for and probably am considering a little more strongly because I know what they're about. I've met their coaches and I've been to their campuses."
Defense Player of the YearT.J. DuckettWidely regarded as the best linebacker prospect in the country. Also one of the nation's top track performers -- has won the state of Michigan shot put championship for two consecutive years, setting the state record with a heave of 65-feet-5 in May, and also ran a leg on the state champion 4x100-meter relay team as a sophomore. Recorded 140 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions (returned one for a touchdown) as a junior. On the other side of scrimmage, he plays quarterback where he rushed for 1,162 yards and passed for another 920 last year. Lists Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Florida State, and UCLA as possibilities. Top three are Michigan State, Ohio State and Michigan; he attended summer camps at all three schools. The Spartans will be tough to beat. Brother Tico starred in East Lansing at running back in the early '90s.
