Holtz, Stoops, Bowden top the wish list

ESPN.com

You need to win one game this season and you have to pick one coach. Who would it be?

Bill Curry
Bob Stoops, Oklahoma
Stoops has already proven himself with his stellar 11-1 record against top-10 teams, including a win over Washington State in last year's Rose Bowl. Miami's Larry Coker is a close second with his national championship in 2001. Historically, though, former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Dodd probably is the greatest game-day coach ever. And as assistants go, former UCLA/Alabama/Arizona coach Homer Smith was unbelievable on the day of the game.

Jim Donnan
Bobby Bowden, Florida State
All you have to do is look at Bowden's track record in big games -- 18 career bowl wins (second-most in history) and two national championships to see why he's the choice. And looking back a bit, Barry Switzer would be my pick to take a team into the national championship game. One of the best of all time, Switzer had confidence enough to sit back and let his coaches coach, but he was a brilliant motivator.

Lee Corso
Lou Holtz, South Carolina
Holtz can get his team ready for one game better than anyone I have ever coached against. Not only is he a master motivator, he also prepares them for the game from an Xs-and-Os standpoint as well as any coach. I coached against Holtz and his NC State team when I was at Indiana, and he is one of the few coaches I ever felt seriously outcoached me.

Kirk Herbstreit
Bob Stoops, Oklahoma
Stoops has had incredible success in his four years at OU, and in that time has displayed a confident demeanor that has filtered down to his staff and, most importantly, his players. His team goes into every game, no matter who they are playing or where, expecting to win. That attitude and a tenacious defense gives his team a chance to win every time it takes the field, and that is what you want in a one-game scenario.

Mel Kiper Jr.
Lou Holtz, South Carolina.
Holtz has been a winner at every stop -- Arkansas, NC State, Notre Dame and South Carolina. He rebuilds programs and won the national championship at Notre Dame. One of his signature coaching jobs was in the 1977 Orange Bowl, when his Arkansas team was faced with the suspension of several players heading into a matchup with No. 1 Oklahoma. Holtz was able to rally his team not only to a win, but to a rout (31-6) of the Sooners to finish 11-1 that year. It's hard to pick anyone over Penn State's Joe Paterno -- who has had unprecedented success in bowl games -- but Holtz posted a 2-2 record against Paterno with lesser teams at NC State in the early '70s, winning at home in 1974 and at Happy Valley in '75, and giving the unbeaten '73 team a scare in Beaver Stadium.
