UCLA WR Freddie Mitchell to enter NFL draft

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- UCLA's Freddie Mitchell became the second wide receiver and third player Friday to forgo his college eligibility and enter the NFL draft.

More could be on the way as Missouri defensive end Justin Smith and Auburn wide receiver Ronney Daniels have scheduled news conferences for Saturday to announce their intentions.

Mitchell showed he was thoroughly recovered from a gruesome broken leg by making 77 receptions for a school-record 1,494 yards and nine touchdowns in his junior season.

"I have had a great time, but it's time for me to give something back to my family," said Mitchell, who also has acting aspirations.

In his final college game, a 21-20 loss to Wisconsin in the Sun Bowl, he had nine catches for 180 yards and a score.

In 1998, Mitchell snapped his right femur in the second game of the season against Houston. Extensive rehabilitation allowed him to play 11 snaps against Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl and he threw a touchdown pass on a fake reverse.

In 1999, Mitchell had 38 catches for 533 yards but was kept out of the end zone.

"I have enjoyed my four years at UCLA but I feel that it is time for me to move into the next phase of my life," he said. "I want to thank my coaches and my teammates and the athletic department for their support, especially two years ago when I was recovering from my broken leg."

Mitchell follows wideout Koren Robinson, a redshirt sophomore who left North Carolina State on Thursday.

Nebraska center Dominic Raiola also declared for the NFL draft on Thursday.

Smith, a 6-5, 273-pound junior, led Missouri in tackles (81), tackles for loss (24) and sacks (11). He also recovered two fumbles and forced a pair. He will make his announcement in the Hearnes Center on the Missouri campus.

Daniels, a 6-1, 212-pound sophomore, led run-oriented Auburn with 41 catches for 476 yards and four touchdowns. He will announce his plans prior to the men's basketball game against Tennessee on the Auburn campus.
