Fitzgerald's return uncertain

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did not practice Friday, one day after injuring his left hamstring.

Coach Walt Harris said he was not sure when Fitzgerald would return.

"I think it's going to take a while," Harris said. "Obviously, we're going to be intelligent about when he comes back, but we're not sure when."

Fitzgerald, who set several freshman school receiving records last season, spent the entire three-hour practice Friday doing rehab and conditioning for the injury.

"Some guys, you have to push them, but Larry, we're going to have to hold him back," Harris said. "Larry probably thinks he's ready to run right now. Obviously, he's not."

Fitzgerald caught 69 passes for 1,005 yards last season, breaking Antonio Bryant's freshman record of 51 catches for 844 yards. Fitzgerald also became the first Big East freshman to have 1,000 yards receiving in a season. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound receiver also had 12 touchdowns, breaking Dwight Collins' freshman school record of 10 in 1980.

Miami linebacker to miss opener
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Linebacker Roger McIntosh had arthroscopic surgery on his knee Friday and will probably miss the Miami Hurricanes' season opener against Louisiana Tech on Aug. 28.

The 6-foot-3, 231-pound sophomore was expected to start alongside Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams this season. He started six games last year and finished with 43 tackles, including eight in Miami's overtime loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.

McIntosh could return Sept. 6 against Florida. Senior Jarrell Weaver is expected to start in his place.

Starting receivers Jason Geathers and Roscoe Parrish will also miss the season opener. Geathers will be out for the next 10 days of practice with a hamstring injury while Parrish is out after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Monday.

Backup running back Jarrett Payton missed his second day of practice after sustaining a concussion in a scrimmage Wednesday.

"He's still having some minor headaches," Miami coach Larry Coker said.

A&M reeling but healing
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- While Texas A&M continues its two-a-day practice schedule, several Aggies will be kept off the field as they recover from injuries.

Punter Cody Scates, offensive tackle Jami Hightower and tight end Patrick Fleming are currently on the mend.

"Cody had a surgical procedure to repair a slight hernia and the prognosis is it will take a couple of weeks for recovery," coach Dennis Franchione said Friday. "Jami will probably be out indefinitely, the doctors say, while on medication for a severe infection. On the first day of contact, Patrick reinjured the shoulder he had operated on in the offseason."

Scates, a senior from Lee High School in Tyler, averaged 43.7 yards per kick last season and has a career average of 40.2 entering the 2003 campaign.

Hightower, a junior from Jacksonville High School, has started 17 straight games on the offensive line for the Aggies.

Fleming is a red-shirt freshman from Heritage High School in Colleyville. He missed the spring drills as well with an injury.

The Aggies open their season Aug. 30 at home against Arkansas State.
