New England Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis seeks consideration to replace Rick Neuheisel as head coach of the University of Washington, according to a report in Friday's Boston Herald. Neuheisel was terminated from the university after his participation in a college basketball pool. Washington offensive coordinator Keith Gilbertson, who has been granted supervisory duties over the team, is considered the front-runner for the head-coaching position. But Weis wants the school to consider him for the post. His agent, Craig Kelly, said that he called the university to let them know of Weis' interest. "The only thing I was trying to do is say there's interest on our end," Kelly told the Boston Herald. "We put the fish hook in the water to see if we could catch anything." Weis, 47, is entering his fourth year as Bill Belichick's offensive coordinator. Following the Patriots' Super Bowl victory over the St. Louis Rams in 2001, Weis received strong interest from the Carolina Panthers regarding its offensive coordinator job. He was also briefly considered by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for its head coaching position. Instead of going to Carolina, Weis stayed with the Pats, signing a two-year deal worth a little more than $1 million, which after the 2003 season. Weis, entering his 15th NFL season, previously has served on staffs with the New York Giants (1988-92), New England (1993-96) and the New York Jets (1997-99) before rejoining the Pats in 2000. |
