Jones says he's out of running for OSU post

ESPN.com news services

Hawaii coach June Jones has pulled his name out of the running to succeed Dennis Erickson as Oregon State football coach, the Oregonian reported on Saturday.

Jones told the Honolulu Advertiser he met with OSU representatives twice while in Oregon this week on vacation. He said he never was offered the job.

He interviewed for an hour on Thursday with what he referred to as a "search committee," but he told the paper he said he wasn't prepared to step down at Hawaii.

"I told them I couldn't leave my players after telling them I would be here," said Jones, who was back in Hawaii on Friday.

Jones is 41-24 at Hawaii.

Former Beavers coach Mike Riley, 49, planned to meet with OSU officials, including athletic director Bob De Carolis, on Saturday in San Diego, according to The Oregonian.

"I'm going to meet with Bob and his group,'' Riley said. "I'm looking forward to talking to them.''

ESPN.com reported on Friday that Riley would interview for the position.

New Washington offensive line coach Dan Cozzetto interviewed Friday for the Oregon vacancy, according to the Oregonian.

Cozzetto is one of three candidates who have interviewed with the Beavers, the Oregonian reports. Cozzetto and current Beavers assistants Tim Lappano and Gregg Smith have all interviewed with OSU athletic director Bob De Carolis.

Other potential candidates reportedly are Boise State coach Dan Hawkins, former Ohio State coach John Cooper, Pittsburgh coach Walt Harris and Fresno State coach Pat Hill.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
