HONOLULU -- Miami Hurricanes quarterback Ken Dorsey has decided not to play in the Hula Bowl, his agent said Thursday, and Marshall's Byron Leftwich has also opted not to play in the Feb. 1 all-star game on Maui.
Dorsey initially accepted an invitation to the game but changed his mind after playing back-to-back weeks in the Fiesta Bowl and the East-West Shrine Classic, agent Leigh Steinberg said.
"He's just taking time to heal up after playing in two successive games,'' Steinberg said.
Aside from some normal bumps and bruises, Dorsey's health is fine, Steinberg said. Dorsey is projected to be a second-day pick in the NFL draft in April.
Marshall's Leftwich won't play because of an injury, the school said.
"He is not going,'' Ricky Hazel, Marshall's sports information director, said Thursday. "It's a matter of still trying to let that leg heal.''
Leftwich suffered a high-ankle sprain Nov. 2 at Akron and missed one game. He eventually led Marshall to its fifth Mid-American Conference championship and a second consecutive GMAC Bowl win.
The 6-foot-6, 250-pound senior was voted the conference's player of the year and is projected to be one of the top picks in the NFL draft.
Meanwhile, Marshall coach Bob Pruett is coaching in the Hula Bowl, and offensive tackle Steve Sciullo plans to accompany him. |
