SAN ANTONIO -- Trinity quarterback Roy Hampton was suspended from the team Wednesday because of his arrest on public intoxication charges last week and will not play in the NCAA Division III championship game Saturday. Hampton, who has thrown for more than 4,000 yards and 43 touchdowns for Trinity (14-0), was arrested early Sunday on San Antonio's Riverwalk after the Tigers' semifinal victory. He'll miss the final against Mount Union (Ohio) on Saturday in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, at Salem Va., the school announced Wednesday. "We have determined that Mr. Hampton's actions were not consistent with the standards for a student-athlete leader on the Trinity campus,'' athletic director Bob King said in a statement. "This action is being taken based upon the prior history of this student, as well as what was learned during our review of the incident.'' King said he could not give any specifics about Hampton's history or the incident for which he was arrested. "We believe that we have no other choice but to take this action,'' King said. Hampton, 23, leads Division III in pass efficiency (184.86). He was arrested after a 41-34 victory Saturday over St. John's (Minn.), earning a trip to play Mount Union. Junior Dan DesPlaines will make his first start in Hampton's place Saturday. In 11 games this season, DesPlaines has completed 23 of 34 passes for 333 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He has also rushed for 48 yards and two scores. Mount Union (13-0) has won five of the past six Division III title games and has won 95 of its last 96 games.
