MACOMB, Ill. -- Players from Western Kentucky and Western Illinois got into a helmet-throwing brawl after the Division I-AA playoff game Saturday.

The fight started soon after Western Kentucky began celebrating its 31-28 quarterfinal victory.

Western Illinois spokesman Jason Kaufman said there were no serious injuries. A Western Illinois player broke his tooth, and a Western Kentucky player had a cut on his nose. A WKU manager also had a cut near his right eye.

Macomb police reported no arrests. A spokeswoman at McDonough District Hospital said one person involved was treated and released, but she declined to disclose details.

''One of their guys came off the bench and got up in one of our guy's face,'' Western Illinois quarterback Russ Michna said.

He said a Western Illinois player gave a shove, and a WKU player swung back.

''From there on, the helmets started flying,'' Michna said. ''It's a shame that something like that happens.''

Western Kentucky won the game when Peter Martinez kicked a 25-yard field goal with 40 seconds left.
