Lombardi finalists: Henderson, Harris, Suggs, Redding

SportsTicker

Linebacker E.J. Henderson, who has sparked a remarkable turnaround by 19th-ranked Maryland, was named one of four finalists for the Lombardi Award on Thursday.

Defensive tackle Tommie Harris of Oklahoma and defensive ends Cory Redding of Texas and Terrell Suggs of Arizona State are the other finalists for the honor, which recognizes the top lineman in the country.

The winner will be announced Dec. 11 in Houston.

Henderson has helped Maryland (8-2) win seven straight games and has topped the 100-tackle mark for the third straight season. He can become the third straight Atlantic Coast Conference player to win the award, joining Jamal Reynolds of Florida State (2000) and Julius Peppers of North Carolina (2001).

"I appreciate that those who are voting recognize me as a player who is deserving of the honor," Henderson said. "Hopefully, I can continue to perform as this year goes on and earn a shot at more consideration."

Facing constant double-teaming, Harris has emerged as a finalist and is trying to become the first Sooner to win the award since Tony Casillas in 1985.

"To be considered among the best players in college football, in a group that includes all of the other players who have been finalists for this award and for an award that has Coach Lombardi's name, it's just a blessing," Harris said.

Redding had 25 tackles and 5.5 sacks in his last five games.

Suggs is looking to become the first Sun Devil to win the award. He has 19.5 sacks this season.

The finalists were chosen in balloting by all Division I head coaches, a selection of media and the 30 living past winners of the award. Former President George Bush is the honorary chairman of this year's event and will speak at the dinner.
