HONOLULU -- Fresno State Athletic Director Scott Johnson issued an apology to the University of Hawaii on Thursday because of a screwdriver thrown by a fan during last week's Hawaii victory at Bulldog Stadium.
Following an investigation, which included a discussion with Warriors coach June Jones, Johnson said, "We believe that a screwdriver was thrown by one of our fans at the University of Hawaii team bench.''
"We sincerely apologize to June Jones, the Warrior football team and the University of Hawaii for the incident,'' Johnson said in a statement. "I am embarrassed by that type of fan behavior. It tarnishes the Red Wave, which has a great reputation across the nation for its outstanding support of Bulldog Athletics. We will not tolerate fans throwing objects onto the field.
"This is a serious issue,'' Johnson said. "Anyone caught throwing anything on the field in the future will be dealt with accordingly, including criminal charges.''
Jones on Thursday said the incident was not an issue for him, despite his comments to The Fresno Bee about nearly being struck in the head by the tool late in the game.
Jones said he only spoke about it to Fresno State officials when he was contacted.
"It's unfortunate that one person can give a great crowd a bad name,'' he said.
Hawaii players consider Bulldog Stadium the most hostile place to play in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Warriors scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Bulldogs 31-21. It was the Hawaii's first victory in Fresno since 1973. |
