Burleson leads nation in receptions

Associated Press

RENO, Nev. -- Nevada senior Nate Burleson, who leads the nation in receptions and is second in receiving yards, has been named as one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver.

The award, named for former Florida State and Oakland Raiders' receiver Fred Biletnikoff, is presented annually by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation. The winner will be honored at the ESPN Annual Award Show on Dec. 12.

Past winners include Antonio Bryant, Troy Walters, Troy Edwards, Randy Moss, Marcus Harris, Terry Glenn and Bobby Engram.

Burleson is averaging 10.6 catches and 130 yards per game. He ranks 18th in the NCAA in all-purpose yardage with 152 yards per game.

The 6-2, 187-pound Seattle native becomes the second Nevada semifinalist, following Trevor Insley's selection in 1999. Insley advanced as one of three finalists that year when he led the nation in receiving and set NCAA records for receptions and receiving yards.

Nevada's Geoff Noisy in 1998 and Alex Van Dyke in 1996 were on the watch lists for the Biletnikoff Award, as well. This season began with 32 players on the watch list.

Burleson went over the 70 reception mark and has surpassed the 1,000-yard barrier for the year with his 13 catches for 107 yards last week at Louisiana Tech. His seventh TD this year was his 17th of his career to move into a tie for ninth in school history. He's one of nine Nevada receivers to top 2,000 career yards.

He had the most yards receiving in WAC and school history with 326 yards on 12 catches at San Jose State in 2001. His 91-yarder in 2001 from David Neill was the longest non-scoring play in WAC history.
