Alleged victim's mom testifies in rape trial

Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. -- The mother of a 19-year-old former University of Georgia student testified Thursday that her daughter called her after an alleged rape and said she had been treated "like a dog.''

The woman testified at the trial of Georgia football player Brandon Williams, who is charged with rape, aggravated assault and aggravated sexual battery. Basketball players Tony Cole and Steve Thomas also face charges in the case.

The players, all 21, are suspended pending the outcome of the case.

"She said she told them she didn't want to do this,'' the mother said in court.

After the phone conversation with her daughter, the woman said she called Athens-Clarke County police before being directed to the university police department, since the alleged attack took place in a campus dorm room.

During testimony Wednesday, the woman said she had consensual sex with Cole in his room the night of Jan. 14. She said Cole went into the bathroom, and Williams came out of the closet.

"I said, 'Who are you?' He came over, sat down on the bed and started to touch me,'' she said.

The man, whom she had never seen before, forced himself on her despite her pleas, she testified.

The woman said that after the first assault, Thomas came to the door of the dormitory. At the encouragement of Cole, she said, Thomas got on top of her and forced himself on her.

"Don't do this, you don't want to do this,'' she told him, according to her testimony. She said Cole was watching and encouraging his teammate.

During cross-examination, Williams' attorney, Kim Stephens, repeatedly questioned why the woman never cried out or asked Cole to help her.

"Did you ever call out to Tony Cole and say, 'Help me.' 'Get this guy off me.' 'Who is this guy?''' Stephens asked.

"No I did not,'' she said. "When he did that, I felt like I lost all power and couldn't do anything else.''

The woman testified that she returned to her dorm, where she and a girlfriend helped a fellow student with his Spanish homework, and watched television.
