Maryland quarterback Chris Kelley could miss the 2002 season after tearing a ligament in his right knee in Saturday's spring scrimmage.
Kelley, a redshirt sophomore, was at the top of the depth chart until he tore the ligament when he was tackled in the scrimmage.
The quarterback tore the same ligament in his left knee last year. He will not be able to begin the 2002 season and could miss the entire year, depending on his rehabilitation, the university said in a statement.
The knee was evaluated Monday by the team's physician, Dr. Leigh Ann Curl. Surgery was tentatively scheduled for early May.
"I am very disappointed for Chris," Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen said. "He has worked so hard over the course of the past year to rehabilitate the injury in his other knee, and this setback is a tremendous disappointment."
The injury moves sophomore Scott McBrien to the top of the depth chart at quarterback. Quarterback Shaun Hill, who led Maryland to a 10-2 record and an Orange Bowl berth last season, has graduated. |
