Georgia allows Donnan to coach in Oahu Bowl

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia will give football coach Jim Donnan a holiday trip to Hawaii before showing him the door.

Georgia officials announced Wednesday that Donnan, who was fired on Monday, will coach the Bulldogs (7-4) in the Oahu Bowl in Honolulu against Virginia on Dec. 24.

"I was sincerely moved by the outpouring of support from my team and their desire for us to finish the season together as a team," Donnan said in a statement released by the school.

"I want to assure everyone that the total efforts of our coaches and players will be directed toward preparing for this game and sustaining all areas of the program, including recruiting, until a new coach is on board."

With quarterback Quincy Carter a Heisman Trophy candidate at the season's outset, the Bulldogs began the campaign ranked 11th in the nation and were picked by many to dethrone Tennessee and Florida in the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division.

But the high hopes were ended in the season's second game by South Carolina, 21-10. Despite a victory over Tennessee, the Bulldogs dropped three of their final four contests, including losses to bitter rivals Florida and Georgia Tech.

"This is his team and I think he should have the opportunity to coach the team in the bowl game," athletics director Vince Dooley said.

Donnan compiled a 39-19 record in five seasons at the school. He spent six seasons as coach at Marshall before arriving at Georgia and three times guided the Thundering Herd to the Division I-AA national championship game.

Georgia has not yet named a replacement for Donnan.
