| ARLINGTON, Va. -- Wide Right III put Miami ahead
of Florida State in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll released Sunday.
Florida State (5-1) tumbled five spots to No. 7 after freshman
Matt Munyan's 49-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide right on
the final play of the Seminoles' 27-24 loss to Miami on
Saturday.
Florida State lost close games to Miami in 1991 and 1992 as
shorter field goal attempts sailed wide right in the final
seconds.
The Hurricanes (4-1) snapped Florida State's 17-game winning
streak and rose two spots to No. 6. Ken Dorsey threw a 13-yard
touchdown pass to Jeremy Shockey with 46 seconds left to give
Miami the lead before Munyan's miss.
Nebraska (5-0) remains atop the poll with a 49-27 win over Iowa
State and collected 1,468 points and 53 of a possible 59
first-place votes.
Virginia Tech (5-0) moved into Florida State's No. 2 spot and
received 1,370 points and three first-place votes. The Hokies
rolled to a 35-13 win over Temple on Saturday.
Kansas State (6-0) picked up the other three first-place votes
and moved up to No. 3 after a 52-13 rout of Kansas.
Clemson (6-0) held on to beat North Carolina State, 34-27, on
Saturday and also moved up one spot to No. 4.
Ohio State (5-0) posted a 23-7 win at Wisconsin and ascended two
places to No. 5.
Oklahoma (5-0) rolled to a 63-14 demolition of Texas (3-2) and
is eighth, followed by Florida (5-1) and Washington (4-1). The
Sooners set a school record with nine touchdowns, including six
by sophomore running back Quentin Griffin. The shellacking
dropped the Longhorns 13 spots to No. 23.
Texas Christian (5-0) is No. 11 followed by Oregon (4-1),
Georgia (4-1), Mississippi State (4-1), UCLA (4-1), and Southern
Mississippi (4-1).
Georgia ascended six spots to No. 13 after a 21-10 win over
Tennessee, dropping the Volunteers out of the poll.
Michigan (4-2) suffered a heartbreaking 32-31 loss to Purdue and
fell 11 spots to No. 17.
Northwestern (5-1), Auburn (5-1) and Oregon State (4-1) round
out the top 20.
Purdue (4-2) is No. 21 followed by Arizona (4-1), Texas, South
Carolina (5-1) and Mississippi (4-1).
Southern California, a 31-15 loser to Arizona, and Michigan
State, which suffered a 21-16 loss to Iowa, dropped out of the
poll along with Tennessee and Wisconsin.
The ESPN/USA Today poll is part of the Bowl Championship Series
standings, which determine the teams that will participate in
its national title game. This season's contest is at the Orange
Bowl on Jan. 3.
