Seminoles cut into Huskers' lead



ARLINGTON, Va. -- Florida, Washington, Southern Cal and Tennessee are among the top teams which suffered losses and slipped in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll released Sunday.

Mississippi State, Oregon State and Northwestern cracked the poll and Purdue, Illinois and South Carolina dropped out.

Nebraska (4-0) and Florida State (5-0) remain 1-2, but the Seminoles took seven first-place votes away from Nebraska. The Cornhuskers, who rolled to a 42-24 win over Missouri on Saturday, collected 37 first-place votes and 1,452 points, while Florida State totaled 21 first-place votes and 1,434 points.

The Seminoles extended the nation's longest winning streak to 17 games with a 59-7 rout of Maryland on Thursday night.

Florida (4-1) slipped from No. 3 to No. 9 after a 47-35 loss to Mississippi State, which powered into the poll at No. 20.

Virginia Tech (4-0) took over the third spot and Kansas State (5-0), which received the other first-place vote, also moved up one spot to No. 4. Virginia Tech beat Boston College, 48-34 and Kansas State posted a 44-21 victory over Colorado.

Clemson (5-0), Michigan (4-1) and Ohio State (4-0) each ascended three spots and hold down the fifth through seventh positions.

Miami (3-1) moved up four spots to No. 8 and Texas (3-1) ascended three places to No. 10.

Washington (3-1) suffered a 23-16 loss to Oregon (4-1) and slipped five spots to No. 11. Oregon rose 10 places to No. 15.

Oklahoma (4-0) is No. 12 followed by Auburn (5-0) and Texas Christian (4-0).

Southern Cal (3-1) fell nine spots to No. 16 after a 31-21 loss to Oregon State. The Beavers moved into the poll at No. 23.

UCLA (4-1) is No. 17 followed by Southern Mississippi (3-1), Georgia (3-1) and Mississippi State (3-1).

Tennessee (2-2) dropped 10 spots to No. 21 after a 38-31 overtime loss to Louisiana State. Wisconsin, which suffered a 13-10 loss to Michigan, fell eight places to No. 22.

One week after upsetting Wisconsin, Northwestern (4-1) went into Michigan State and posted a 37-17 win over the Spartans and moved into the poll at No. 24. Michigan State fell 10 places to No. 25.

Purdue was beaten by Penn State, 22-20, Illinois suffered a 44-10 loss to Minnesota and South Carolina fell to Alabama, 27-17.

The ESPN/USA Today poll is part of the Bowl Championship Series standings, which determine the teams that will participate in its national title game. This season's contest is at the Orange Bowl on Jan. 3.
