ARLINGTON, Virginia -- Surviving on the road was the formula used by Nebraska and Florida State to remain 1-2 in
the latest USA Today/ESPN college football coaches' poll
released Sunday.
The Cornhuskers (2-0) were extended to overtime by a fired-up
Notre Dame squad, but overcame a disastrous day on special teams
to defeat the Fighting Irish, 27-24, in their first visit to
South Bend since 1947.
Nebraska gave up two touchdowns on punt returns, but Eric Crouch
kept the Cornhuskers No. 1 with a seven-yard TD run in overtime,
his third of the game.
Nebraska collected 48 first-place votes and 1,461 points, 46
more than Florida State (2-0), which garnered 10 first-place
ballots and 1,415 points after struggling to defeat Georgia
Tech, 26-21, on the road.
Despite the loss, Notre Dame (1-1) climbed two spots to 23rd.
Miami (1-1) and Georgia (1-1) were the biggest losers. Miami
tumbled 10 slots to No. 14 after a 34-29 loss at Washington,
while the Bulldogs plummeted 12 spots to 22nd after a 21-10
defeat to South Carolina.
The Huskies (2-0) jumped five notches and cracked the top 10 for
the first time this season.
Completing the top five were Michigan (2-0), Florida (2-0) and
Wisconsin (2-0). The Badgers got the remaining first-place vote,
despite an unimpressive 27-23 home victory over Oregon.
Texas (1-0) starts the second five, followed by Kansas State
(2-0), Virginia Tech (2-0), Tennessee (1-0) and Washington.
No. 11 Southern California (2-0), No. 12 Purdue (2-0) and No. 13
Alabama (1-1) all jumped a spot following victories. Alabama
rebounded from a season-opening loss to UCLA with a 28-10 win
over Vanderbilt. The Crimson Tide tumbled from third to 14th
following their 35-24 setback to the Bruins.
Ohio State (2-0), Clemson (2-0), UCLA (2-0), Illinois (2-0) and
Michigan State (1-0) round out the top 20. The Spartans opened
their campaign with a 34-24 victory over Marshall and gained
three spots.
Texas Christian (1-0) is 21st, while No. 24 Auburn (2-0) and No.
25 Colorado State (2-0) debuted in the poll for the first time.
Mississippi and Southern Mississippi dropped out.
The USA Today/ESPN poll is part of the Bowl Championship Series
standings, which determine the teams that will participate in
its national title game. This season's contest is at the Orange
Bowl on January 3.
