A&M: Linebacker suspended, lineman ineligible

ESPN.com news services

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Junior linebacker Randall Webb of Texas A&M has been indefinitely suspended for an unspecified violation of team policy, head coach Dennis Franchione said Friday.

Franchione also said junior defensive lineman Brandon Johnson is ineligible to compete due to academics.

"It is unfortunate when these things occur, but we will move forward with the players who are eligible to compete," Franchione said in a brief written statement.

Baylor quarterback released from scholarship
WACO, Texas -- Baylor quarterback Davon Vinson was released from his scholarship Wednesday, allowing the sophomore to transfer to another school this fall.

"We wish Davon the best," Baylor coach Guy Morriss said. "If his heart isn't into being here, it's best for all concerned that he move in a different direction."

Vinson played in six games in 2001 as a true freshman, completing 9-of-23 passes for 71 yards and three interceptions. He redshirted last season.

Broyles says only season ticket holders can see Florida
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Those who want to watch Arkansas take on Florida in Fayetteville this fall will have to buy season tickets, Athletic Director Frank Broyles says.

Broyles wrote in a letter to fans who bought season tickets for the Little Rock games only that he does not expect individual game tickets to be available for the Arkansas-Florida football contest Oct. 18.

He said such tickets will only be available in the Fayetteville season ticket packages.

Florida is expected to be a hot ticket because it is one of college football's top schools and has not played in Arkansas since 1996.

Broyles said the letter was meant to encourage, not to strong arm, fans. He said individual tickets won't be an option because new season ticket sales this summer are expected to account for the few seats remaining.

"All we're doing is marketing," he said.

If any individual tickets remain, they will go on sale the week of the game.

Starting running back dismissed by Montana
MISSOULA, Mont. -- Coach Bobby Hauck has dropped starting running back David Gober from the Montana football team.

Hauck did not say why he dismissed Gober, but the reason may be Gober's continuing academic trouble. The 5-foot-9, 190-pounder sat out spring ball for academic reasons.

Gober, from Anaheim, Calif., could not be reached for comment Wednesday. He was the No. 2 rusher on the Grizzlies last season with 480 yards. He scored five touchdowns and averaged 4.4 yards per carry. Hauck said he thinks Gober will wind up at a junior college.

Player who jumped out of girlfriend's window dies
PITTSBURGH -- A college football player who jumped out of a second-story window to escape his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend has died.

Rodney Abercrombie, 23, a senior defensive back at California University of Pennsylvania, died late Thursday night after sustaining serious head injuries, California coach John Luckhardt said Friday.

Police said Abercrombie was asleep with Melissa McCoy in her apartment when her former boyfriend, Durran Long, climbed onto an awning, broke a window and entered the apartment.

Police said Abercrombie and Long scuffled in a hallway and Abercrombie ran into a bedroom and shut the door. He jumped out the window to escape when Long forced the door open.

Long, 19, of Aliquippa, was arrested at a hospital where he was being treated for a cut on his arm. He was charged with aggravated assault, trespassing and other counts.

Abercrombie led Division II in return yardage last season.

Philadelphia gets Army-Navy game for 2009
PHILADELPHIA -- The Army-Navy football game, one of the most storied rivalries in all of college sports, will be played in Philadelphia in 2009.

Last month, the service academies said Philadelphia would host the game four times between 2004 and 2008. The 2007 game will be played in Baltimore. This year's game is in Philadelphia on Dec. 6.

"This news is an added bonus for Philadelphia and a testament to the hard work and passion put into bidding on this great American classic," Mayor John F. Street said in a statement Monday. "Over the next seven years, Army-Navy games will pump $100 million into the local economy, truly establishing this as Philadelphia's bowl game."

Philadelphia has hosted 76 of the 103 games between the service academies.
