Thursday, December 5 Great hire for Texas A&M By Trev Alberts Special to ESPN.com |

If Texas A&M is paying Dennis Franchione significantly more than the reported $1.5 million per year that Alabama offered him, I'm not surprised at his decision to accept the Aggies' job.
There has been some talk in the coaching community that Alabama might potentially be facing more sanctions down the road (unrelated to Franchione). If that's the case, and if he didn't know about them when he took the 'Bama job, then I completely understand why he's leaving. But if there are no new sanctions, Franchione's decision troubles me. It bothers me that coaches can just up and leave a program when players must sit out a year (or two years in conference). I'm in favor of reform regarding the movement of college football coaches. Why shouldn't a head coach have to sit out a year if he leaves while under contract? Whatever Franchione's motives, this is a great hire for Texas A&M. He's a phenomenal coach, and the Aggies will show marked improvement immediately. They will be disciplined and tough, and they'll play great defense. But if he left just for the money, that irks me. I'm against any head coach who leaves a program (and his players) just because he got a better gig. Trev Alberts is a college football analyst for ESPN. |
