Lee, greetings from Rota, Spain. My friends and I are wondering if Virginia Tech has a snowballs chance of beating Miami on Saturday?
Depends on the weather. If it comes up cold the snowball won't melt, but if it's normal South Florida weather, forget about it.
Last year West Virginia was 3-8 and a horrible football team. This year WVU is 9-3 and ranked No. 15 in the BCS. With such a turn around in only two years, should Rich Rodriguez be considered for coach of the year?
He should be, but Ohio State's Jim Tressel has won all 13 of his games in the same region, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz lost just once in 12 games and Miami's Larry Coker has not lost a game in either of the last two seasons. Rich Rodriguez has done a wonderful job with the Mountaineers and has gotten some attention from the media, but he will not win the coach of the year award.
If USC played Miami today at a neutral site, who would win?
I don't normally deal with hypotheticals, but I would go with USC. The Trojans have more firepower at every position, great athletes, a tough defense and a terrific quarterback in Carson Palmer. I think it would come down to the quarterbacks, Palmer vs. Ken Dorsey, and while Dorsey would probably win that battle USC would probably win the game.
Lee, I'm an avid Notre Dame fan, and I'm sick of all the people here at Penn State saying how they would beat the Irish. Why is a Notre Dame vs. Penn State bowl game out of the question?
Penn State is going to the Capital One Bowl to face an SEC team, so that's why an ND-PSU matchup is out of the question. But if they did play I think the Nittany Lions would be able to beat the Irish. Notre Dame was exposed against USC as a well-coached team without a lot of offensive talent.
Lance, Flowery Branch, Ga. I like Arkansas' chances because the Razorbacks are hungry and have some good athletes, but Georgia also has a lot of talent, especially at wide receiver with guys like Fred Gibson and Terrence Edwards. I think Georgia wins in a very close game.
Dear Lee, how do you feel about CU's chances against Oklahoma this weekend and do you think the pounding OU took from Oklahoma State will have an impact on this game?
After the Colorado lost to Oklahoma earlier this year, I predicted that the Buffs would win the Big 12 North and beat whichever team they played in the Big 12 championship game. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Coach, do you believe that the University of South Florida deserves an invitation to a bowl game with a 9-2 record?
The problem for USF is that it is an independent and a great majority of the bowl bids are locked into agreements with particular conferences. The Bulls can't control that. But don't forget that they begin play in Conference USA next season, so they'll have plenty of chances and won't have to worry about this kind of situation again.
Coach, I know that teams not in the power conferences get little recognition. However, I haven't heard you talk at all about the TCU Horned Frogs and their second-ranked defense. What do you think of this years team?
They have done a terrific job down there this year and their defense is outstanding. Louisville is getting all the attention in Conference USA because the Cardinals have played three Thursday night games on ESPN, so if the Frogs want some national exposure I recommend they schedule some of those showcases.
Tell me your thoughts on one of the best backs in the nation. He plays for Oregon State, No. 34 Steven Jackson. He has 1,656 yards this season, not bad for a second year player. Do you think he could be a candidate next year for the Heisman?
Jackson could definitely be a Heisman candidate next year. Oregon State lost some games early this year and people forgot about him, just like they did with Onterrio Smith when Oregon started losing. But Steven can play and he will surely make some noise in the race next season, but don't forget that Mimai's Willis McGahee will also be back and he's not bad, either.
