Trojans, Longhorns have the advantage this weekend

By Lee Corso
Special to ESPN.com

If USC beats Notre Dame on Saturday and Carson Palmer excels once again, should he win the Heisman Trophy?
Troy Pilalas, Newport Beach, Calif.

First of all, USC has too many athletes for Notre Dame and the game being played in Los Angeles is a huge advantage for the Trojans. They and Kansas State are the two hottest teams in the nation right now. And with a great game on national television Palmer would certainly have a shot at being the Heisman frontrunner because the race is so wide-open.

Editor's Note
Lee Corso and the rest of the GameDay crew can't get to every campus this season, so ESPN.com has given fans another option: It's called "Lee-Mail." Lee has an opinion on just about anything related to college football. So, go ahead and send him a question. He'll answer questions each Wednesday during the season in "Lee-Mail."

Coach, what is your take on the Texas A&M-Texas matchup?
Aggie Freak, Dallas, Texas

It is going to be very difficult for the Aggies to pull off the upset because the game is in Austin, and Mack Brown rarely loses at home. Texas A&M has improved a lot but is inconsistent, beating Oklahoma then losing to Missouri, so who know what team is going to show up. Right now I would go with Texas because the Longhorns are playing at home.

As a Colorado fan, should I be worried about CU going into Lincoln with Chris Brown injured and perhaps out of the game?
Bob, Superior, Colo.

I wouldn't worry about Lincoln, I would focus on Oklahoma and the Big 12 championship game. The Buffs have clinched the Big 12 North but can't make the national championship game, so they might as well put all their eggs in one basket and go after the conference championship.

Virginia destroyed Maryland last weekend and defeated NC State the previous week. The Cavaliers have locked up second place in the ACC but a haven't cracked the Top 25. Why can't the Wahoos get any respect?
Dennis Mooney, Charlottesville, Va.

Because the had a bad start and people have long memories. Virginia is a good team and has come a long way, but the Cavaliers are not ranked right now because they didn't win big early games against Colorado State and Florida State and lost recently to Georgia Tech and Penn State.

Should the Pac-10 and Big Ten have championship games? The SEC and Big 12 do, and inthe Big East and ACC all teams play each other during the season. This would eliminate the ridiculous idea of sharing a championship.
Wes, Cartersville, Ga.

The situation we have in the Big Ten this year with Iowa and Ohio State tying for the championship without playing each other is rare. Neither the Big Ten or Pac-10 should change things. The scheduling is a little quirky with some teams not playing each other every year, but since these situations hardly ever happen everything should stay the same.

Ell Roberson
Ell Roberson and the Wildcats have won their last five games by a combined score of 253-30.
Lee, I understand your rationale for why Kansas State is not ranked higher, but do you think anyone beat the Wildcats right now? Would any team really want to meet them in a bowl game?
John, Nazareth, Pa.

I'm not sure anyone could beat them right now and no one wants to see them in the postseason. The only team with a chance might be USC, but don't forget that K-State beat USC earlier this year in Manhattan.

Coach, do the Seminoles really have a chance against the Gators this year?
William Brown, Deland, Fla.

With all the things going on in and around the Florida State program the Gators are looking pretty good in this game. They are ready to play and on a high while the 'Noles are floundering right now, and Florida has a definite advantage even at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Coach Corso, Miami tends to play their defensive secondary farther from the line of scrimmage than most teams in the country. Would this present problems against Ohio State and a healthy Maurice Clarett?
Jeff Prymas, Toledo, Ohio

Well, after seeing Clarett in person I can tell you that he is going to be able to run against anyone. The Miami secondary comes up fast enough to attack anyone so the matchup to watch is going to be the Ohio State offensive line against the front seven of the Miami defense. But as I said, the Buckeyes can run against anybody, including Miami.

Coach, what does Arkansas have to do to beat LSU this Friday? If they do win do the Razorbacks have a shot at upsetting Georgia in the SEC championship game?
Brandon Patrick, Conway, Ark.

First of all, the Razorbacks need to run the football well against LSU. But they have rushed for over 200 yards in each of the last three games so that shouldn't be a problem. Arkansas has a team that could play with anyone, including Georgia in the SEC championship.

Happy Holidays, Lee! After stunning Iowa State last Saturday, it appears that Connecticut's football program has finally arrived. With the new stadium coming next fall, a good young QB in Dan Orlovsky and a great RB in Terry Caulley, how do you feel UConn will do as the Huskies get ready to join the Big East full time in 2005?
Mark, Manchester, Conn.

The folks in Connecticut have to be careful not to get too optimistic too quickly. The Huskies beat a Cyclones team that has been demoralized by one of the toughest schedules in America, but there is still a long way to go before things really start looking up. Not so fast, my friends!
