Ohio State better watch out for the helmets

By Lee Corso
Special to ESPN.com

Coach Corso, I'm glad to see Kliff Kingsbury finally getting the air time he deserves. If he continues his high level of play and upends Oklahoma do you think he deserves to be a Heisman front runner?
William, Lubbock, Texas

Not the front runner. The front runner is Ken Dorsey for what he has done over the period of a year. Kingsbury has played some very good games, yet he has been average in some others. I think he has moved onto the list and if he beats Oklahoma he definitely stats on the list.

Editor's Note
Lee Corso and the rest of the GameDay crew can't get to every campus this season, so ESPN.com has given fans another option: It's called "Lee-Mail." Lee has an opinion on just about anything related to college football. So, go ahead and send him a question. He'll answer questions each Wednesday during the season in "Lee-Mail."

Do you think the Michigan defense will be good enough to contain Ohio State in Columbus? And who do you think will run the ball this week for the Maize and Blue?
Andrew, Gladwin, Mich.

First of all, Michigan's Achilles' Heel this year has been its run defense. So you would think Clarett, Ross and Hall would be able to get some yards against the Wolverines. But this is "The Helmet Game" and Michigan will play inspired football. OSU has to be careful of that. For Michigan, Chris Perry had a career-high 175 yards last week and you can expect to see both him and B.J. Askew carrying the ball.

Aloha Coach! Why isn't USC's Pete Carroll being mentioned for national coach of the year? The Trojans could win out to go 10-2 against the nation's toughest schedule and he deserves to be considered.
Andrew Mayon, Maui, Hawaii

I couldn't agree more, but Pete is not going to be the national coach of the year because guys like Ohio State's Jim Tressel, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz and Washington State's Mike Price have even better records this year. If the Trojans hadn't lost two games already he would be in that group of guys who might win.

Lee, after Washington beat Oregon easily and seemed to get back on track, can the Huskies beat Washington St. in the Apple Cup and ruin the Cougars' chances of going to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl?
Troy Mazzan, Boise, Idaho

Absolutely. You never know what is going to happen in a rivalry game like that. Washington has a great passing attack, but the big questions are whether the Huskies can run the ball and stop Jason Gesser and the Washington State offense.

If a three-way player were on the field 90 plays per game, had four game-saving interceptions and had his team at 12-0 and atop of the BCS, wouldn't he be a lock for the Heisman? Why not give the trophy to Ohio State's Chris Gamble?
Ken Smith, Cleveland, Tenn.

Gamble has been good on defense but has not done that much on the offensive side of the ball. Guys like Ken Dorsey, Byron Leftwich and Willis McGahee are making plays all day long and that is what separates them from a guy like Gamble. He is a good Heisman prospect some day, but not right now.

Lee, if Notre Dame can beat Rutgers this week, will they be assured of a BCS Bowl berth regardless of the result of their last game at USC? Even with a loss, wouldn't a 10-2 Irish team still have the inside track at an at large bid?
Greg, South Bend, Ind.

There is no doubt in my mind and I'll guarantee you this: even if Notre dame loses to Rutgers it will still make the BCS, and if Miami makes the title game the Irish will be in the Orange Bowl. Every bowl game would love to have Notre Dame and its drawing power.

Coach, what do you think about this year's Iron Bowl? Will it be better than last year or will Alabama just wash Auburn away again?
Matt, Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Auburn is a lot better than it was last year and played well last week at Georgia, but that was a TOUGH loss to the Bulldogs and those are the kinds of games that take a lot out of a team. So I wouldn't be surprised if Alabama waxed the Tigers again.

Coach, what is your take on what Al Groh is doing with the Virginia Cavaliers and their many freshmen? How do you see them doing for 2003?
Matt, Lynchburg, Va.

The Cavaliers are one of the best young teams in the country and have something like 15 freshman playing regularly. Al Groh is a great recruiter and a terrific coach, and Virginia has joined Maryland as a team Florida State has to watch out for in the future in the ACC.

Coach, Will KSU ever get any respect from the rest of the country? They have lost 2 games by a combined 7 points, they've blown out Iowa State and Nebraska, and have one of the best defenses in the Nation. So why are they only ranked number 10?
Grant Lyerly, Lake City, S.C.

No, because the Wildcats lost two games. Right now they are playing better than anyone, but two losses are tough to come back from. The reason Southern California is ahead of K-State in the rankings despite having lost to KSU is strength of schedule. The Trojans have played the toughest schedule in the nation while Kansas State's non-conference opponents included teams like Western Kentucky, Louisiana-Monroe and Eastern Illinois.

Mr. Corso, do you think the West Virginia Mountaineers have what it takes to beat Virginia Tech in Blacksburg? Do you think Avon Cobourne will have the same success he did against Miami?
Greg, Stillwater, Okla.

It was amazing to me that Pittsburgh's Brandon Miree had 161 yards against Tech in Blacksburg and Syracuse hung 50 points on the Hokies the following week. I have no idea what has happened to VT and neither do the Hokies, so Avon Cobourne and the Mountaineers definitely have a shot this week.
