Upsets looming for Miami and Ohio State?

By Lee Corso
Special to ESPN.com

Do you think anyone will beat Ohio State or Miami before the end of the season? Steve V., Kalamazoo, Mich.

Illinois has a shot against OSU in Champaign because the Illini can throw the ball, and never underestimate the helmets of Michigan against the Buckeyes. Syracuse is hot-and-cold, Virginia Tech has lost some luster and Pittsburgh is good enough to beat Miami, but I don't know if the Panthers can do it in the Orange Bowl.

Editor's Note
Lee Corso and the rest of the GameDay crew can't get to every campus this season, so ESPN.com has given fans another option: It's called "Lee-Mail." Lee has an opinion on just about anything related to college football. So, go ahead and send him a question. He'll answer questions each Wednesday during the season in "Lee-Mail."

Lee, does LSU has a chance at beating Alabama after the emotional win over Kentucky, or do you think the Alabama passing game will hurt the LSU secondary after Jared Lorenzen had 210 yards on just 12 completions lat week?
Joshua Fontenot, Baton Rouge, La.

Alabama is a great running team and that is what the Tide will do first against LSU. The Tigers are coming off a huge win, but Alabama is sound in all phases of the game and beating the Tide, even at home, will be a tall task.

Coach, why is Arkansas not getting any respect in the polls? The Razorbacks have a top-ten schedule, convincing road wins over Auburn and South Carolina, a lopsided win over possible WAC champion Boise State and took Tennessee to six overtimes.
Bryan Morgan, Little Rock, Ark.

Arkansas has been up-and-down this year and has too many losses in the conference (three) to get a lot of respect in the polls. A loss to Kentucky, no matter how improved the Wildcats are, will not help the prestige of any team.

Coach, why aren't Pac-10 quarterbacks getting any respect? Washington State's Jason Gesser and USC's Carson Palmer are lighting up the scoreboard but are still behind Marshall's Byron Leftwich and Miami's Ken Dorsey in the Heisman debate. Dorsey's numbers are nowhere close to Gesser and Palmer and he and Leftwich have not faced the same tough competition Southern Cal or WSU have. Thanks for taking a question from a GI.
Trey, Kadena Air Base, Japan

Gesser and Palmer have put up good numbers this year and deserve to be in the Heisman debate. The problem is they play on the west coast and not a lot of people see them on a regular basis. Gesser has had the better overall year in my opinion, but Palmer has really come on with at least 317 yards in four of the last five games. And the next generation of Pac-10 QBs is waiting in the wings with guys like Arizona State's Andrew Walter and Oregon State's Derek Anderson, so the QBs out there will continue to be among the best.

Do you think Texas A&M's Reggie McNeal can do to Texas in the seson finale what he did in the upset over Oklahoma?
Nathan Herrod, San Diego, Calif.

McNeal can make plays with his athletic ability and has a good arm, so there is a chance he could lead the Aggies past Texas. But the biggest problem for the Aggies against Texas is that the Longhorns have a good defense like Oklahoma, but also a much better offense than the Sooners and A&M might not be able to hold the 'Horns down in Austin.

Brad Smith
Missouri freshman Brad Smith could become the second QB ever to pass for 2,000 yards and run for 1,000 in the same season.
What do you see in the near future with Brad Smith at quarterback for the Missouri Tigers? I feel that the offense is there and that they would be a terrific if they had a better defense.
David, Katy, Texas

Absolutely right. Smith is the best young quarterback I have seen this year and is on pace for 2,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards. If Gary Pinkel can get some players to build a defense around Missouri has a good chance to improve its standing in the near future.

Do you think Nebraska can go to Manhattan and beat Kansas State this week?
Pat Witt, Omaha, Neb.

Nebraska needs to go to K-State and run the ball well. If the 'Huskers can do that everything else about the team improves: tempo, defense, kicking game, confidence. They have to establish the ground game and get the Wildcats to commit a lot of men to the line of scrimmage, and if that happens there is a good chance Nebraska will win the game.

With Terrance Edwards, will Auburn's defense be able to stop Musa Smith and beat Georgia?
Justin Hokanson, Auburn, Ala.

Edwards is out but the Tigers better watch out for Fred Gibson, who also has speed and can make some plays on the outside. But the thing I remember about Auburn is how it destroyed LSU earlier this season by limiting Nick Saban's team to under 80 yards passing for the game. Smith might get a few yards, but the Georgia offense won't have an easy day.

What does Clemson need to do this weekend to beat Maryland in Death Valley, and do you think Charlie Whitehurst is a better fit than Willies Simmons in the Clemson offense?
Grant Lyerly, Lake City, S.C.

Ralph Friedgen has lost only four games since he became the coach at Maryland: two to Florida State and one each to Florida and Notre Dame. The Terps are no longer a pushover and they come into this game with seven straight wins, so Clemson has its hands full. But based on the last two weeks Charlie Whitehurst is the man for the Clemson offense and if they can get him going he will give them a chance against Maryland. The Whitehurst-Tuberville tandem is looking like a winning combination for Clemson for the next couple years.

What are you thoughts on this weekends game between Texas Tech and Texas? Can Tech pull out a huge win and throw another kink into the Big 12 South?
Ryan, Pensacola, Fla.

Kliff Kingsbury will throw the ball all over and put a big scare into the Longhorns. The Red Raiders should score some points and give Texas a game, and the Longhorns better be wary of the trip to Lubbock.
