Big games on tap in the big conferences

By Lee Corso

Do you think Pac-10 leader Washington State can control Oregon's Onterrio Smith after the problems it had with Ohio State's Maurice Clarett earlier this season?
Donovan Kaufman, Liberty Lake, Wash.

The difference here is that WSU has played six games since facing Clarett and the Buckeyes and will be better prepared for a big-name back like Smith. But don't forget, the Cougars contained Clarett in the first half of that game. Don't worry, though, because even if Smith has a big day Washington State will outscore Oregon because of the Ducks' weak defense.

Editor's Note
Lee Corso and the rest of the GameDay crew can't get to every campus this season, so ESPN.com has given fans another option: It's called "Lee-Mail." Lee has an opinion on just about anything related to college football. So, go ahead and send him a question. He'll answer questions each Wednesday during the season in "Lee-Mail."

Coach, who do you like in the Big 12 North battle between Kansas State and Iowa State this weekend?
Scott Lovetere, Boulder, Colo.

I like Kansas State. The Wildcats are a hot team and the fact that they have a well-balanced offense and a tough defense gives them an edge. Iowa State is one of the surprise teams in the country this year but the Cyclones started to lose a little luster when Oklahoma stuck it to them and they haven't recovered yet.

Lee, what does Michigan have to do to win in the Gopher Dome against Minnesota on Saturday night?
Henry Winokur, Troy, Mich.

To win there Michigan has to play good defense against the Minnesota rushing attack, but most importantly it has to run the ball effectively because when the Wolverines do that the rest of the offense falls into place. They threw the ball all over the field against Iowa and couldn't make any yards, so they have to worry about the run first, play D second and then worry about throwing the ball.

Simple question: can Purdue upset Ohio State this week?
John Miles, Las Vegas, Nev.

The Boilermakers definitely have a chance because the game is in West Lafayette on the grass. And Purdue's five losses have come by a total of 22 points, so the game should be close.

The Vols are having an off year, but what do you think Tennessee's chances are against a stumbling Miami team?
Gary Kennedy, Knoxville, Tenn.

Any time the Vols play at home they have a chance, and if Miami continues to struggle and beat itself early the Hurricanes won't be able to catch a talented Tennessee team in the fourth quarter. The effort UM had last week against Rutgers won't cut it in Knoxville.

Adrian McPherson
Adrian McPherson gives Florida State more quickness on offense.
Coach, how would you rate Adrian McPherson's performance last week, and will he be able to repeat it against Georgia Tech without Greg Jones in the lineup?
Matt Bryant, Tallahassee, Fla..

First of all, Nick Maddox will fill in for Jones and add some speed and breakaway ability that was missing from the offense. With he and McPherson in the backfield the Seminoles are much quicker than with Chris Rix and Jones, and FSU has a shot to put up some numbers against Georgia Tech.

Lee, I have two questions. First, who do you think has the edge in this coming Saturday's game between NC State and Maryland. Second, which star player in this matchup will come up big, NC State quarterback Phillip Rivers or Maryland linebacker E.J. Henderson?
Chris Foster, Seat Pleasant, Md.

Maryland has a lot of momentum coming into this game and its only defeats this year have been against Notre Dame and Florida State, and the fact that NC State lost last week will be a problem for the Wolfpack. Rivers is a terrific passer, Henderson is an outstanding linebacker and each should have a good game, but I give the Terps the edge in this game because they are playing so well lately.

Oklahoma seems to have great coaches and appears to be a training ground for head coaches. Is there a coordinator on the current staff who could get chosen as a head coach at the end of the season?
Frank, Dallas, Texas

The No. 1 candidate on that staff is associate head coach/co-defensive coordinator Mike Stoops. He has the charisma and knowledge of his brother and OU head coach Bob Stoops, and would be a good choice for any program looking to hire a new head coach.

Coach, can you explain the breakdown at Washington this season? The Huskies have talent and seem to show flashes of it, but they always seem to fall short.
Grant McDonald, Seattle, Wash.

Two things have hurt the Huskies: they can't run the ball and they can't play defense. When a team struggles in those two phases there is bound to be trouble. And I also think the NCAA investigation into Rick Neuheisel's recruiting practices at Colorado has resulted in some internal problems that have hurt Washington.

Do you think Florida has a good chance at winning the SEC East?
Ryan, Pensacola, Fla.

The Gators still need Georgia to lost another game and I don't see the Bulldogs tripping up again in the conference. So for right now Florida has to wait and see and the 'Dawgs have the upper hand.

With all the turmoil surrounding the program what can Michigan State do to right the ship?
Glenn Williams, Chicago

For starters, the Spartans can't give up on the rest of this season. Michigan State has to come flying out of the box this week at Indiana. Interim head coach Morris Watts is a good coach with over 40 years of experience and he brings a lot of knowledge to the game. He is also a good motivator and could possibly turn things around a little before the year is out.

Coach, I am a big Texas A&M fan. With a tough defense and the way the Aggies played against Oklahoma State, do they have a chance of upsetting the Oklahoma Sooners this Saturday?
Andrew Brown, Washington, D.C

I've used this example before and it also applies here: the last time I was in College Station the Aggies had first-and-goal in the fourth quarter with a shot to beat Oklahoma. They didn't get in but they had a shot, and they absolutely have a chance this year, too. Texas A&M has been in close games with the Sooners before and probably learned some lessons.
