The underdogs have a chance this weekend

By Lee Corso
Special to ESPN.com

Coach, what happens on Thursday: Does Byron Leftwich becomes a serious Heisman candidate or do the Hokies become a serious BCS contender?
Mike, Columbus, Ohio

I think we could see both happen. If Leftwich has a spectacular game, completing a lot of passes and leading his team to some touchdowns, he's a natural choice for the Heisman Trophy now that Red Grossman and Ken Dorsey have slipped a little bit. On the other hand, if Virginia Tech win this game by scoring a lot of points then it is obviously a serious BCS contender.

Editor's Note
Lee Corso and the rest of the GameDay crew can't get to every campus this season, so ESPN.com has given fans another option: It's called "Lee-Mail." Lee has an opinion on just about anything related to college football. So, go ahead and send him a question. He'll answer questions each Wednesday during the season in "Lee-Mail."

Coach, what do you think about the Nebraska-Penn State game? Do the Nittany Lions have a chance?
Andrew, Omaha, Neb.

Penn State always has a chance, particularly playing in Happy Valley, and people always underestimate Joe Paterno's ability to get his team up for big games. He has a knack for winning big-time games like this one, and I wouldn't be surprised if Penn State gives Nebraska all it can handle. I'm not so sure Nebraska has been tested yet, so I think this will be a good test for the Cornhuskers and a close game.

After seeing the Alabama-Oklahoma game do you think Alabama is underrated or is Oklahoma overrated?
Andrew Gray, Columbus, Ohio

A little bit of both. I said before the game that Alabama had a good chance to upset Oklahoma because the Tide was better than the Sooners thought. Oklahoma's offense is struggling and they have a great defense, but Alabama exposed some of their weaknesses. I'm not sure OU is the best team in the nation but I know that Alabama is much better than people think.

After an easy win over Akron do you think Maryland's defense can contain some of Florida State's offensive weapons, and do they have a slight chance to upset the 'Noles on Saturday night in College Park?
Chris Foster, Seat Pleasant, Md.

First of all, Akron and Florida State are completely different teams. There's no comparison there. But Maryland always has a chance. Ralph Friedgen will come up with a good gameplan and Florida State has struggled at times on defense. I'm not sure Maryland can win, but the Terps at least have a shot.

If UNC comes out and scores early against Texas do the Tar Heels have a chance to win in what should be a rowdy environment for Mack Brown's return to Chapel Hill?
Tim Durbin, Chapel Hill, N.C.

The first thing you have to remember is that Mack Brown has been gone from North Carolina for a while, so I don't think that is a big factor. Any team that jumps out in front early has a chance, but I think Texas will have enough poise, composure and talent to win this game.

How do you view Southern Miss this year? Do you believe they could be the surprise team of the year, and how about the performance Derrick Nix had against Illinois.
Rick, Atlanta, Ga.

I picked Southern Miss to win that game because of two things: Illinois' inability to run the ball and the fact the Southern Miss can. I think Nix is a very good running back. The Golden Eagles are a definite contender in Conference USA and are just as good as Louisville, no question about it.

B.J. Askew
B.J. Askew and the Wolverines had better not underestimate Notre Dame in South Bend.

Does Notre Dame have a good chance to win this weekend against Michigan with the offensive problems they have had in the past two weeks?
Chris Zuyddyk, Allendale, Mich.

The offensive problems at Notre Dame start with the line. The Irish need better pass protection and better run blocking. Just looking at the first two games you would have to say that Michigan is the favorite here, but this is Notre Dame playing in South Bend and you can never count the Irish out at home.

I watched the Washington State-Idaho game and I felt that the Cougars and Jason Gesser are overrated. How do you see the Cougars doing this year and, more importantly, do you think Gesser is a worthy Heisman candidate?
Paul West, Portland, Ore.

I did not see the game, but all your questions will be answered Saturday at Ohio State.

Coach, with Texas A&M's defense becoming one of the best in the nation this season, what is it going to take for the offense to turn it around and take advantage of the favorable schedule they have?
Clay Johnson, Dallas, Tex..

The problem with the offense is the passing game. Mark Farris got a bad rap after the first game but he was playing with a sore shoulder, so the Aggies just need to keep trying to develop an offensive system that can take advantage of the players they have. The more they play together this year the more they can work on that, but their offense is never going to be as good as their defense.

I was wondering if you have any thoughts on why Air Force has had a reasonable amount of success over the past few years while Army and Navy have floundered?
Dan Lynch, West Point, N.Y.

First of all, each of these three academies offers a wonderful opportunity to serve the country. But nowadays, everyone who volunteers for a service academy wants to be in the Air Force because it's more glamorous. West Point is a tough, hard-nosed academy and the Naval Academy offers a chance to see the world, but everyone who goes to the Air Force academy things they are going to be a jet pilot. And the environment in Colorado Springs is pretty nice, too. All those things give Air Force more to choose from.

Lee, which teams do you think are the most underrated this year?
Riley Clark, Murfreesboro, Tenn.

BYU is a team I have seen in person that is very underrated. I like their team and I thought they were very good in the game I saw against Syracuse. And it looks to me like UCLA might be a lot better than people think. That was a pretty good Colorado State team the Bruins beat last weekend in the fourth quarter.
