With their lackluster performance against Central Florida on Saturday, how do you see Penn State finishing the season. Will Joe Paterno retire if the season is a bust?
First of all, I don't think Joe Paterno should retire. He's earned the right to tell us when he's going to retire and I think we should just quit talking about it. Penn State was pretty good in that game but they had some lapses in the fourth quarter and that will happen in an opening game. They were flawless for part of the day against Central Florida and they just let UCF score a couple of late touchdowns. They are much, much better than they have been in the recent past and they'll be alright.
With an impressive win over Colorado last week, what are Colorado State's chances of making it to a BCS bowl game? They seem to have all the ingredients with a solid defense and underrated talent on offense. It's too early to tell. They have a difficult schedule. They have UCLA this weekend, and still have BYU and Air Force back-to-back in October and either of those two teams could beat them. It's a long way between now and the time the BCS is decided.
After watching the first Oregon game with Fife at the helm, do you see the potential for the Ducks to make a run for the national championship?
Jason Fife played very well. But they have a lot of tough games, although most of them are in Autzen Stadium. They're tough to beat there, even though they did lose the Stanford game there last year and it cost them a shot at the national title. But they'll definitely be in the hunt, no doubt about it.
Miami seems very strong, even invincible. Do the 'Canes have any weaknesses that Florida may be able to exploit to pull off the upset next week?
Every team has weaknesses, I don't care it you're Miami or Florida or whomever, but the key thing for Florida is to play their game and not try to beat Miami at its game. Florida better play solid defense and use the crowd at The Swamp. The key to me in this game, though, is that Miami's special teams are light-years better than Florida's. If we were to say right now that this game is going to be decided by special teams, I would say that Miami would clobber Florida.
As a former coach, do you feel Georgia head coach Mark Richt is doing the right thing by playing both David Greene and D.J. Shockley at quarterback? Or could this hamper Georgia`s bid for the SEC title and a or possible BCS bowl bid? From what I saw the other night, I don't think they could have won the game with either guy by himself. Shockley made some good plays when he got in there and Greene made some good plays and some erratic ones, so I think he's smart using both of them. I know that differs from what some of the other guys on GameDay think, but I think Mark Richt knows what he's doing.
Coach, watching Carson Palmer of USC it appears he might be ready to fulfill all of the hype. If he does, can USC win the Pac-10 10? You must have watched the wrong game! I thought he played erratic at times against Auburn. He overthrew open receivers and made two poor passes on interceptions. He did have that last drive, but I think a lot of that had to do with the offensive line controlling the line of scrimmage. So they have a long way to go. Plus, they have one of the toughest schedules in America.
What about Kentucky? They beat the No. 18 team in the nation. This will give them some confidence, so do you think they have any chance to go to a bowl this year?
Not so fast, my friend! That was an overrated Louisville team with a porous offensive line and a defense that got tired. I did not have Louisville in my top 20 at the beginning of the year, Kentucky did not beat a great football team and the Wildcats will play lots of good football teams in the SEC.
After watching last week's game what do you think of Brad Smith and Missouri's chances if they play every game like that?
I think they definitely have a chance to be a bowl team, and I was very impressed with Brad Smith. He can run and throw and he has great speed and quickness. And I thought Missouri as a team looked very good. That was a good Illinois team and they really ripped the Illini apart.
Seeing Virginia Tech take LSU, the defending SEC champs and your national championship contender, behind the woodshed, do you now think that Virginia Tech has can possibly be in the hunt with the questions at quarterback?
I was very impressed with Virginia Tech and I've thought from the beginning that they have a chance to be in the hunt. Bryan Randall isn't a bad quarterback and their defense and running game are very good. But they still have to play Miami in Miami, so before they start thinking about the national title they better get to that game first because Marshall's not bad and might sneak up on the Hokies.
Coach, do you think Alabama has a shot at beating Oklahoma if the Tide avoids the penalties (16 for 126 yards) that plagued them against Middle Tennessee? Absolutely, and I'll tell you how they can beat Oklahoma. Everyone says you can't run the option against the Sooners because they run so well, but Alabama will have to throw the ball deep and every once in a while run the option against man coverage and see if they can break a big play. If Alabama beats them, that's how they'll do it. Lee, I know you were at BYU's game against Syracuse and and I know you have seen some talented teams this season. I'm wondering if you feel BYU is capable of defeating some of the higher-ranked teams in the country? Spencer Lybbert, Sandy, Utah Sure they do. I was very, very impressed with BYU. I saw Washington and Michigan later in the week and I thought personnel-wise their offense was as good either of those teams They were better on defense than I anticipated but they're not as good there as some of the top teams in the country.
