Indians much better than 0-3 record shows

Joe Hollis promised an improved Arkansas State team this year and the Indians certainly have the best team in Hollis' four years in Jonesboro and perhaps one of the best teams in school history.

Yet, all the Indians have to show for themselves this year is an 0-3 record following a tough 19-17 loss to Memphis Saturday. It marked the second time this season the Indians have lost the lead in the final minute of the game. In the opener, the Indians lost to North Carolina State in double overtime after a last-minute field goal by the Wolfpack tied the score.

In Saturday's loss, Memphis' Ryan White kicked his fourth field goal of the game, a 35-yarder with just 49 seconds left after the Indians had gone ahead on a 50-yard pass from Cleo Lemon to Robert Kilow.

Although Hollis is obviously frustrated about losing two heartbreakers in the team's first three games, he's staying positive about his team's effort.

"I thought our effort was outstanding," he said after the Memphis loss. "We played much better on the defensive side of the football. We didn't get the job done in the fourth quarter, obviously, but I'm proud of our effort and I'm proud of the way they prepared and the way they play the game."

The Indians might have a couple of wins under their belts if they had found some easier teams to schedule, but Hollis is glad his team has faced a tough schedule and believes it will help his team when league play starts in October.

LaDainian Tomlinson
Arkansas State must contend with TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson, who leads the NCAA in rushing.
"We need to use this schedule as an advantage to our football team," he said. "We want to let the difficulty of our schedule be an advantage for us. When we get into our conference play, let's make sure that playing the difficult schedule early is a benefit for us. Hopefully we can stay fortunate and keep most of our key people healthy and continue to improve, and use this tough schedule as an advantage to us, because we've been there."

It gets even tougher for the Indians this week when they play 18th-ranked TCU on the road. They're not the only Big West team on the road. The other five Big West teams are all on the road, including two other Big West teams are also facing ranked teams.

North Texas must play No. 4 Kansas State, while New Mexico State takes on No. 24 Georgia. In other Big West games, Utah State plays at 2-0 Arizona State, Boise State goes to Central Michigan and Idaho travels eight miles across the border to play Washington State.
