Thursday, December 19 Updated: December 20, 6:37 PM ET Hauck returns to his Montana roots Associated Press MISSOULA -- The University of Montana named Washington defensive assistant Bobby Hauck as the Grizzlies' new head football coach Friday, ending what proved to be a quick search for Joe Glenn's replacement.
"Obviously this is an outstanding opportunity for me,'' Hauck said. "I never dreamed I'd be able to come back to Missoula in this capacity.
"I grew up loving the Grizzlies as a child to this moment,'' he added. "I've had a chance to work with some great head coaches and some great assistant coaches and they all had a hand in getting me here.''
The Grizzlies' formal announcement came a day after Hauck arrived by private jet in Missoula to meet with team members and Grizzly boosters.
"My goal is to put my stamp on this place and take it to a higher level,'' Hauck said. "I am excited as I can be to be back here.''
Hauck, 38, will receive a base salary of $105,000.
"We had one candidate who clearly surfaced above the rest of the field in our interview process and that was Bobby Hauck,'' said Wayne Hogan, UM's athletic director. "He was prepared and he had everything covered, from coaching staff, to coaching philosophy, to his recruiting plan. He says all of the right things from his heart and he means them.''
Washington head coach "Rick Neuheisel called me every day during the coaching search process extolling the virtues of Bobby Hauck,'' Hogan said.
Hauck plans to stay with the Huskies through their Sun Bowl against Purdue on Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas.
During Friday's press conference, Hauck also named some of his assistants. His offensive coordinator will be Rob Phenicie, who was most recently the offensive coordinator at Wyoming, while his defensive coordinator is Jeff Hammerschmidt, who held the same post at St. Mary's in Moraga, Calif.
Hauck said former college and NFL assistant coach Fred VonAppen would serve as the assistant head coach. VonAppen, 58, has coached with the 49ers, Vikings and Giants of the NFL. He also was an assistant coach at Stanford and was recently the head coach at Hawaii.
Hauck said Dave Schramm, currently an assistant at Southwest Texas State, will serve as UM's recruiting coordinator and offensive line coach while former Griz player and assistant coach Kraig Paulson, most recently at Utah State, will return as the linebackers coach.
He also said his uncle, Tom Hauck, will remain at UM to assist with the defensive line. Luther Carr, currently at Washington, will be an offensive assistant while Hauck said he would oversee the special teams.
Hauck replaces Glenn, who was hired by Division I Wyoming on Dec. 12. Glenn coached three seasons at Division I-AA Montana, compiling a 39-6 record, including a national championship in 2001 and a second-place finish in 2000. The Grizzlies lost to top-ranked McNeese State in the quarterfinals this year.
Hauck was born in Missoula, lettered in football, basketball and track at Sweet Grass County High School in Big Timber, competed in track and field at Montana and served as volunteer assistant coach there in 1988 and 1989.
He served as a graduate assistant at UCLA from 1990-91 and was the school's assistant recruiting coordinator and personnel analyst in 1992. He was Northern Arizona's recruiting coordinator and outside linebackers coach during the 1993 and 1994 seasons, was special teams coach at Colorado from 1995-98 and was Washington's special teams coach from 1999-2002. He worked with the Washington safeties from 1999-2001 and was the secondary coach in 2002.
He is the brother of Tim Hauck, who played at Montana from 1987 to 1989 and is now a safety for the San Francisco 49ers. Tim Hauck was released from Philadelphia earlier this month, after four seasons with the team.
