Stoops again in NFl coaching rumor mill

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- It's that time of year again for Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.

As Stoops prepares No. 8 Oklahoma for the Rose Bowl game against seventh-ranked Washington State, he is dealing with speculation about his future.

Tom Coughlin was fired Monday as coach of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, and Stoops' name is among those mentioned as possible replacements.

"I'm not even dealing with innuendoes, rumors, all that B.S.,'' Stoops said after his team's final practice for Wednesday's game. "That isn't anything to talk about. I've got nothing to say about all that junk. It comes out every year.''

Last year, Stoops stayed at Oklahoma after being wooed to replace Steve Spurrier at Florida, where Stoops spent three years as defensive coordinator. The year before that, he was considered a candidate for the Cleveland Browns job.

"Usually about this time I get all those rumors and all that junk starts, and I'm not dealing with it,'' he said.

"I'm not talking to anybody about anything, period. I'm talking about the Rose Bowl and that's it, winning this game. Rumors, I'm not going to deal with.''

His brother, co-defensive coordinator Mike Stoops, said the program has grown accustomed to the annual ritual.

"It's something Bob deals with each year. It shows you the quality of coach he is,'' Mike Stoops said.

"He has a special thing at Oklahoma. I know Bob has strong feelings about Oklahoma,'' he said. "Everyone had him going to Florida last year and it never happened, and that's a special program to him.''
