In the second half UCLA couldn't sustain what it had done offensively. They got good production out of DeShaun Foster in the first half and nothing in the second half. Clearly the Bruins were affected by the loss of Cory Paus and their two corners. That really hurt them.
But when they had a chance late in the fourth quarter to make plays, it is inexcusable that they didn't go to Freddie Mitchell, Brian Poli-Dixon or Foster. In those key situations you have to go to your playmakers. It kept them from being able to mount a final drive to get back in the ballgame.
This was a typical performance from Wisconsin. They hung in, battled, wore the Bruins down and Jamar Fletcher sealed the game.

IT WAS OVER WHEN ... |
Wisconsin cornerback Jamar Fletcher, who had struggled during the day, intercepted Scott McEwan's pass with a minute left Friday, preserving Wisconsin's 21-20 victory.

GAME BALL GOES TO ... |
It would be easy to go with Fletcher, or even Mitchell, who set a Sun Bowl record with 180 yards receiving, but Fletcher wasn't the best player on the field and Mitchell lost his chance for drawing taunting penalties during the game that forced the Bruins to settle for a field goal early instead of a possible TD. So, we go with Badger coach Barry Alvarez, who kept his team composed and improved to 6-1 in bowl games.

Badgers have last word
Barry Alvarez and the Badgers celebrate their Sun Bowl victory. UCLA receiver Freddie Mitchell made plenty of big plays -- enough to earn MVP honors -- but it was Wisconsin cornerback Jamar Fletcher who made the biggest as the Badgers edged UCLA 21-20 in the Sun Bowl. Fletcher, who was burned by Mitchell throughout the day, intercepted a pass late in the game to seal the victory.

No national title, so Badgers play for price Wisconsin opened the season in the top five, but they won't finish there -- despite a Sun Bowl bid.
