Williams will try to attend Rose Bowl

SEATTLE -- Washington's Curtis Williams, who has not moved since sustaining a spinal cord injury during a game Oct. 28, might be able to watch in person when the Huskies play in the Rose Bowl.

Williams, a strong safety from Fresno, Calif., began using a wheel chair at a rehabilitation center two weeks ago.

"He is in the same condition," Washington coach Rick Neuheisel said Friday. "There's very little progress. But they're getting him situated in his wheel chair. He's learning how to use it.

"His spirits remain upbeat. He's going to do everything he can to get to the game."

Washington plays Purdue on Jan. 1 in Pasadena, Calif.

Williams had surgery last month to fuse two of his vertebrae. His doctors must clear him to go to Pasadena.

"The Tournament of Roses has told us they will do everything in their power if he can get to the game to make sure he's in a good situation and can watch the game," Washington media relations director Jim Daves said.

"His body may not be responding to the extent that we had hoped, but he still is fighting the good fight," Neuheisel said. "I believe the story will have a happy ending."
